According to my acceptance letter, I was accepted to the Core Program in Liberal Studies at NYU. I did some research and it seems that LSP accepts students who were rejected from their school of choice but show potential at NYU. I’ve heard both negative and positive things about the program. I don’t think I would mind the smaller class size, but are the professors as good as the professors in the College of Arts and Sciences (where I originally applied)? Do students in the other schools look down on LSP students? I want to major in political science or women’s studies, so would this program limit my opportunity to take classes on those subjects during my freshman and sophomore year? It seems like LSP mostly accepts students who indicated on their application that they weren’t sure what they were going to major in, but I specifically stated that I plan to major in political science, so this confuses me. I would greatly appreciate any information that can be provided!
Admissions into the Core Program and LS are kinda foggy. I was told it was more about “fit” in terms of your background, high school profile, essay, etc. Also your interest in the humanities fits well the curriculum. I am studying Cultural and Social Analysis and Communications after finishing the Core Program and I feel much better off than my classmates who started off in CAS or Steinhardt. None of my LS classes were over 25 kids and our “general education” classes were way better. Now I’m in classes with 50, 100+ students.
First year was pretty prescribed by I had 3 electives each semester in my Sophomore year so plenty of time to take courses in your major. If anything it helped get all of your required stuff out of the way so you dont have to sit in a math class senior year, which is nice.
There is a slight misunderstanding/negative perception about LS which I personally feel come from websites like this and misinformation/people not understanding the program. However, I met my best friends in LS, had some of the best professors, and am doing great in my major/new school now. If anything I feel I benefited from the smaller classes and smaller community at NYU which is already a huge place.
If no one else says it, Congratulations on your acceptance, LS is GREAT!
