what are your top ten reasons why being democrat is better than being republican.... or visa versa

I am more anti-Bush than anti-conservative.

Both my parents are doctors

I believe the U.S. has a duty to step in on behalf of the helpless (i.e. use of military force when those wanting democracy are unable to achieve it due to harsh dictators)

Incentives for promoting growth of U.S. corporations in the modern, global economy.

Certain moral values

Ronald Reagan and John McCain :)

Emphasis on American Individualism (rather than government helping ppl every step of the way...gives ppl less incentive to achieve individual independence)

Abuse of the welfare system

Interests associated with my future career

More discretion to the states

Democrats tend to support overspending on social programs...unneeded spending most of the time

Democrats are too extreme on issues of abortion, and fail to realize that sex = babies and ppl should live with it (unless the mother's life is at stake ofcourse)

Democrats try to be too reclusive and are reluctant to stand up for the United States' interests

i agreee with nahrafsfa

Libertarian. Radically socially liberal, economically conservative.

I'm a centrist. I find both parties very annoying.

right leaning Moderate. Socially slightly liberal economically right.

I'm pretty conservative, except I don't support the death penalty. Also, I don't know what to think about the war in Iraq. I'm definitely not an anti-war hippie, but I think there is definitely a problem with the intelligence system, and it needs to be addressed.

oh yeah, I'm a republican, but I'm socially liberal on ALOT of things....overall I'm more republican....I think the war in iraq was a gamble Bush lost...i'm more moderate leaning right like mahras

very socially liberal, but don't believe in excessive useless spending
(...the war counts)

I'm doing what I can to be educated about where I stand, I'm not going to write Bush off as a drunk frat boy or whatever

I am an ultra-liberal, I believe-- basically i am almost a tree hugger but an inch shy. I support developed welfare systems and socialized medicine.

I too am an ultra liberal. I think we do need to revamp the welfare system entirely, but the idea of the system is good and a nationalized healthcare plan.

The fact is that liberals tend to think with their hearts and believe that we have a responsibility to help others as much as possible. I am a firm believer in this principle and because of this I am very much an advocate for a tax increase of 5-10% that would help pay for more education programs, a socialized medicine program and would allow us to redevelop the welfare program. We also need to recheck our national budget and cut Pentagon funds by about 1/2. 66 cents of every dollar goes to the Pentagon. We already have the biggest and most powerful military in the world with more than 27,000 nuclear weapons...we don't need much else. Put 1/2 of that money into public programs and helping fund other countries and we might see a drastic change in the world.

Oh yeah. Because you can split up a political system into two astonishingly overgeneralised categories and say which one is better.

What about being Libertarian? Green party? Constitutional?

What happened to discussing issues? And by discussing, I don't mean talking about the party line, I mean discussing the myriad of views that can exist on a single issue. The political spectrum isn't in 1-space; it's at least a 2-dimensional creature, maybe more.

As long as people continue to propagate the current two-party paradigm, America will simply keep drifting further and further away from representative democracy.

"This is how liberty dies... to thunderous applause"
-Padme Amidala, Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith

IMO, since it's pretty obvious from history that we can't stop social progress (the liberal of today is the conservative of tomorrow), future generations will, in the end, laugh at all non-radical liberals in history.

That said, I couldn't possibly be more radically liberal. I think communism is long overdue in the US, citizens have a right to bestiality, and above all, the military should be dismantled, etc.

mm. Not a Hobbesian, eh.

To me, I just can't comprehend why any smart, educated person would be a liberal. Its just doesn't make any sense.

Socially moderate, economically liberal for me. But I'll still only vote Dem, so what difference does that make anyways?? lol

Because there are -no- smart, educated people who are liberals. They are all actually engaging in a fallacy. Thanks for pointing that out, alukaszewicz.

Oh, Im fairly disgusted by the sanctimonious demagoguery of both major political parties and am probably closer in spirit to the Libertarians than anything else. I suppose if I have to pick my poison, Ill go with the Democrats because the Republican strategy in the last election literally made me sick to my stomach. Im not so sure it was the strategy itself so much as its success. Here we were, the aggressors in a war our president started under false pretenses killing untold thousands of innocent civilians in the name of removing an isolated despotic nuisance from power who was most likely going to die of natural causes in the next decade anyway, and the election was decided on trivial moral issues like gay marriage. How simple! Inflame religious sentiment and mobilize bigotry to divide and conquer. Its not a Federal question, but we can make it one by attempting to pass a Constitutional Amendment! Get the stupid fat-and-happy super-sized Big Mac eating gas guzzling SUV drivers fighting about that and theyll forget about the rest ... I dunno I think it mightve made me sicker that the Democrats didnt come up with anybody better than Kerry. Makes me wanna cry, corporate oligarchy. Gah I still get worked up

Yeah. Seventy-two percent of college professors and the Ivy League graduates on the left side of the isle are neither smart nor educated. LOL

Awesome. That's the kind of tirade I like to see.
