Hi,

How republican/partisan is W&L? I know that it's known as a conservative school, but are there no democrats/liberals at all? Or is it like a 50/50 balance? Because that would be great. lol

Very traditional with 80% of students in fraternities and sororities. Very southern with Robert E Lee buried on campus. Based on your other posts this is not your ideal fit.

Thanks. Yeah I was just looking at it, but really felt “weird” about it.

College Dems is very strong, and the faculty are like the faculty at every other college in that they’re very liberal. But, the student body is overall very conservative. Many students however don’t care about politics at all.

My daughter is a freshman and a Democrat and so far has no complaints. But we are from the deep south where “conservatives” are on the far right of the political spectrum, so to her it’s a lot more moderate than what she’s used to. Students tend to be fiscally conservative but socially moderate. I would say the average W&L is right of center - but coppijr is right about College Democrats being active. Overall, my impression is that the average “conservative” on campus is more old school Republican than Tea Party.

thank you, this is helpful.

Liberal W&L sophomore here, reporting in late. I have yet to meet a Republican on campus who, when asked, says anything but “Well, I’m socially liberal but fiscally conservative.” I campaigned door-to-door for Obama last year when College Dems was working in overtime, and the worst I’ve ever gotten, even at the height of the presidential election, was some good-natured teasing (and I gave as good as I got).

Yes, the majority of students are probably Republican. But it’s not like they parade the fact down the street and turn hostile if you happen to be a Democrat. The most common reaction is either, “Oh, you’re a Democrat? That’s cool,” or “YOU ARE? I’m secretly a Democrat, let’s fervently agree on our political beliefs,” because there is an appalling number of closet Democrats on this campus.

D’s experience has been similar to those reported by nbc1993, coppijr, & Familiar. It is quite possible to be traditional, southern, and liberal all at the same time. The 2015 Mock Con will be Republican, but that is always because it is the party opposite to the one currently in power.

Faculty and students come to W&L from all over the country, and increasingly, all over the world. It is not the same place it was a generation ago.
