Libraries: Which colleges have the best?

Yeah, I’ve only visited Perry Castaneda (is that how you spell it?). Which of the “pretty” libraries are closest to the Tower/West Campus?

It’s hard to beat this one ( the George Peabody Library at Johns Hopkins) [Google Image Result for http://www.library.jhu.edu/bin/f/f/peabodyinterior.jpg](http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.library.jhu.edu/bin/f/f/peabodyinterior.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.library.jhu.edu/friends/peabody.html&usg=__fyPK705QqPCJSm-1G5LGZMwJTs0=&h=2000&w=3008&sz=1176&hl=en&start=3&um=1&tbnid=fuyTttwe2HnoPM:&tbnh=100&tbnw=150&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpeabody%2Blibrary%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26rlz%3D1B3RNFA_enUS273US273%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1)

since some people mentioned NYU’s Bobst library…

here are the pictures…

Why is it that a building in Texas isn’t really famous unless somebody has fired a rifle from it: the Alamo, the schoolbook depository in Dallas, that tower at UT Austin where Charles Whitman was, that cult’s compound that got destroyed by the feds, etc.

A fabulous hidden gem…The Elmer Belt Library of Vinciana at UCLA

I don’t think Robarts Library @ U Toronto is that ugly. If you want a hideous building, look at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3a/Suzzallo_Library_Graduate_Reading_Room.jpg</a> @ Udub.

Anyway, the BYU library is pretty stunning:

http://www2.et.byu.edu/~bartc/Pictures/BYU%20Campus/BYU_Library&WC&Emtns.jpg</a>
[BYU Lee Library](http://www.heatheng.com/Education/Project1%20Lee%20Library.html)

EDIT: Sorry about the links, here they are.

^ Add/fix those links, please? I’m quite curious!

“Elmer Belt Library”

Sounds like it houses a collection of Hillbilly S&M equipment.

That library at Johns Hopkins is amazing.

I agree that the Wesleyan library is amazing.
NYU’s library is very breathtaking with it’s 13 stories of open-air lobby beauty.
Also, Johns Hopkins’ main M.S.E. library is very very nice as well, though it will be 1000x better in a few years when they complete the Brody Learning Commons, which will connect to the library underground and feature a lot of cool stuff not found on other campuses.

Plus, I have yet to find a college library that can match the ornate magnificence of the Peabody Library of Johns Hopkins University:

http://lisagoldresearch.files.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/2009/06/peabody-library.jpg</a>
http://www.library.jhu.edu/bin/f/f/peabodyinterior.jpg</a>

they even use it for wedding receptions because of how pretty it is ;)

http://www.gepbaltimore.com/photo/image/168/freed_20071019_0018.jpg</a></p>

and yeah, I’ve visited a lot of nice libraries including just about all the ivies, duke, and whatnot, but nothing made my jaw drop like Peabody (with the close call of NYU Bobst…lol, but Peabody is a lot more intricate and adorned)

Does anyone have more pictures of the Wesleyan library? My dim recollection of my visit was “very dark and gloomy,” which seems to be a flawed impression.

I couldn’t imagine doing actual work in that.

Some parts of Wesleyan were dark, but I liked it like that. The entire building seemed pretty magnificent to me.

noimagination: the library is actually a really good source of humanities research and houses some pretty rare collections too. The natural daylight provided through the skylight is a really really cool feature and I really prefer it over the annoying fluorescent lights that are standard library fare.

It’s actually a really cool place to work. Though yeah, the sights can kinda distract you. lol

"they even use it for wedding receptions because of how pretty it is "

Cool!! When you get tired of doing the Chicken Dance, you can just grab a book and catch up on your reading.

U Wisconsin’s history libray is similar to JHU’s and currently being restored to the original look. It house one of the largest history and film libraries in the US.

[Wisconsin Library Heritage Center: Search Results](http://heritage.wisconsinlibraries.org/mt/mt-search.cgi?tag=Wisconsin%20Historical%20Society&blog_id=74)

Can you get there by boat?

The magnificent Reading Room at U. Wisconsin reminds me of the Grand Reading Room at the Ohio State University which had just undergone an extensive renovation, and is set to re-open in 2 weeks. :)

Being in High School I can’t compare any…but I live near University of Washington and wow, it has everything I could ever comprehend and more. Very useful for the projects I’m doing now, senior year :- ) I especially like the primary printed sources from the early 1900s…very useful.

Sparkeye, I don’t get it, did they check all the books out of that library, or what?[Flickr Photo Download: IMG_0057](All sizes | IMG_0057 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!)

Oh, I get it. When the weather is crappy, they clear out all the tables so the Buckeye football team can practice in there. That way, all the players can say they’ve actually been in a library.

University of Kentucky has a beautiful and very capable library.
