Lie about age to join a fraternity

Let me explain my situation. I'm 22 years old (23 in december) and i'm interested in joining a fraternity next semester. I spent a couple years working for my uncle's business before I decided to start college. Currently I have completed 54 hours so I have a ways to go before I graduate. I want to get out and meet some people and I thinking joining a fraternity is a good way to do it. The problem is I go to a large state school and getting into a fraternity/sorority is fairly competitive and they would probably think twice about signing someone who is 22. So I was thinking about when I'm rushing just telling them I'm a sophomore (which is technically true) and not volunteer that I'm 22 and started college late. Of course at some point after I would have joined I will have to fill out an emergency contact form or something and say my date of birth.

I want to make the most of my time in college and I don't want the circumstances in my life that caused me to start later to hold me back. I don't think it would be the worst or most unethical thing in the world if I said I'm a couple years younger than I actually am. If I do decide to lie about my age do you think there is a way they could find out somewhere down the line? Is anyone here in a fraternity that has been in a similar situation that I am in?

I don’t see why being 22/23 would matter. All that really means to them is that if you go to a party they have (and are drinking) then they don’t have to worry about supplying a minor with alcohol and getting in trouble with police for it if they come to break up the party.

If this is a competitive scene, being a sophomore is definitely a negative. I imagine a 23 year old pledge would be good. Now they can easily have one of the pledges deal with going to buy all the booze.

A frat could care less if you are 22. Less liability on their part, actually.
