lieing in college application

hi peoples,
I have a kinda personal question about this subject. I know this is a very touchy subject, controversial from what I've read so far, but here I go. U

Kinda of a background on the lieing person, GUY. (sorry it's sort of a rant)

This GUY at my school, who is infamous for cheating, has cheated on the SAT(2370) and SATII's(800~700's) and AP exams(he's doesn't even know how to derive x^2 and he got a 5 on AP calc AB, is that even possible? Plus he took these tests at another school instead of at our school like everybody else did). He hasn't been caught by any officials, but there's alot of evidence of it( like I know the "tutors" that "took the test with him" and such). Though his GPA is not that good (because he got caught cheating so many times in class). From what I've heard he has been expelled or almost expelled at his previous school for cheating and such. So it's definately on his record.

because of his cheating rep, pretty much all of the teachers rejected his request for letters of rec, but for somereason he has a rec from a teacher who apparantly rejected him. I'm planning on asking that teacher when he comes back to our school, he left to get his M.D, and I know that if the GUY really did somehow make a fake rec letter for himself the teacher will report it.

Now I'm not worried about all that stuff I mentioned above. I know things like that are irrelivant or should I say, not worth the effort of my concern.

The real issue is, a teacher that DID really write him a rec letter was the one who lied. One of my classmates somehow read the GUY's rec letter and saw that the teacher wrote that the GUY started Academic Decatholon at our school and is a role model, etc etc about his "character". Well, the made-up stuff about role model and his "character" isn't something I'm that concerned about. But the important thing is, that in fact he did not start the Academic D, our school's not even part of it.

I don't know why the teacher wrote all these lies for him, but is there some way to report this? I'm not sure if I'm to bring this up to the principal because WE weren't really supposed to read that rec letter. WE kind of want to report this to the colleges directly.

Please don't get me wrong about my reasons. To tell the truth, I really don't like this GUY at all, but that's not the reason I'm thinking of ratting him out.

It's mostly my friends who have issues. They're all applying to similar colleges, and this GUY is competition for them. Our schools competitive enough with only 10 students a class, so we normally get only 1 or 2 acceptances per college. If this GUY gets accepted instead of my friends, it'll all be because of his lieing, cheating, falsification of documents, etc. and it's really unfair.

Is there any advice you guys might have on what I should do about this? My friends are asking me to be the "reporter" and send letters to the colleges he's applied to (b/c I'm not applying there and something about anonymous letters are disregarded.)

Do colleges do a "check-up" on his application b/c of his record of academic dishonesty?

Thanks for taking the time in helping,
I'm really stuck in a corner right now :X

Leave it alone, this has nothing to do with you whatsoever. Seriously. He has not harmed you or involved you in anything. Your ‘friends’ are involving you. Frankly, it’s none of their business either. Universities don’t have a quota for admission per school. That GUY isn’t going to take their slot at any one school. They are applying in a pool with 40k other candidates. Any number of the 40k applicants may get a spot instead of your friends, or he may. Welcome to life.
Worry about your own applications, let your friends worry about theirs, and certainly leave this GUY alone. Life is full of GUYs like this.

^In all the other cases on CC like this, I have advised to “live your own life” BUT, I have to say its time for you to get involved. When the teacher is lying, then its gone too far. You have to definite proof that was found legally. Similar to something we learned about in AP govt., if evidence is found illicitly, then it will not be used against that person. So that letter you read, will probably be discredited because nobody’s supposed to read it, and they can’t prove it unless they read the letter, which they can’t do. However, if you find no hard evidence and try to turn him in to your school, this will probably all backfire on you and you will suffer consequences for trying to sabotage other students. If you try to mail the colleges, there is no reason for them to believe you. Your a kid. Heck, I could send a letter to the college a classmate is applying to that tells all about how he cheated in an ap course, blah, blah, but theres no way to prove it. You have to present this information to a counselor or principal but only after you have hard legal evidence which to present. maybe you could get a tape recorder and have him confess all this stuff while talking to him in private. But then again, you could spend all this time, working on YOUR applications and school life. “Heroes aren’t born, they’re made.” (made that up right now  …) Sorry for the rant. Just trying to give you a lot of perspectives to help guide you with this tough situation. Good luck :)

A hero isn’t someone who rats out a classmate, and searches for a teachers possible wrongdoing when it has no affect on them whatsoever.

Heros fight for democracy and freedom, heros teach in the inner city, heros raise money to feed families that need help, heros are those that think beyond themselves.

^^^ how terribly ironic

You have favorite teachers you could talk to about this? Someone who really knows the policies regarding these issues within your school, perhaps your GC. If something like this happened at my school, I’d definitely tell my GC.

And yes, I am a firm believer of the fact that students are rated against eachother if they come from the same school. If someone has amazing records and the others do not, that’s going to, formally, policy-stated or otherwise, affect the rest of the applicants in some way. Maybe the add comm happens to be reviewing the school together, or 2 applicants from the same school at the same time?

I’d say definitely find a teacher you’re close to and tell him/her about this.

If the GC knows about the situation with this guy, with his cheating and all, and reports it on the SSR, they universities are going to realize something is probably suspicious.

He’ll get what he deserves. They all do. It’s true what ^ said about students from the same school being rated against one another, but if his GPA’s crappy then the high SAT score does almost nothing. Your friends will be fine and if this guy really does make it into a top school, he’ll drop out soon enough. Colleges are filled with professors who will not excuse this guy’s cheating and he WILL cheat in college if he wants to stay in the game. It’s just a matter of time before he’s caught one too many times and kisses his future goodbye.

^Exactly, what is to be worried about now is that he will be stealing a spot from better deserving students.

Leave it alone…I’m sure that something about this person’s application just won’t ring true, if your accusations are correct. It’s too hard to get so many people on board for such a conspiracy. Admissions denies people with high test scores and a great resume all the time - they pick up on things that aren’t necessarily “kosher”. Let it alone. Things tend to work out as they should. I would concentrate on yourself and putting out applications that best represent you.

Don’t be a jerk. Because he has better EC’s and Scores than your friends (even if he did cheat) I still don’t think it would be right for you to ruin his whole college process.

I wouldn’t do anything personally. But here is what I think:
If the person gets in to a good school, if he/she does not change, the justice shall be done. Just like the guy who faked the application materials and got into Harvard and eventually kicked out due to continued misconduct at Harvard.

There are too many fishy elements to this story. I have trouble believing that anybody “somehow” read this recommendation. If this is real, you should keep out of it.

@Blueiguana—yah hes not going to be a hero, but its the right thing to do. Ratting out? Sometimes things go too far, such as in his school. When the teacher is lying and your not even going to try to do something about it? Your must be really self-involved dude.
@OP----i agree with hunt, this is starting to like its too risky. Don’t do something stupid and get yourself in trouble.
@UVA

^Thats because he cheated and lied. the OP is not being a jerk, albeit he is probably a little resentful, but that’s human nature.
@OP, out of curiosity, how did he cheat on the ap exams? how did he cheat on the SAT’s? its just not plausible that he could actually cheat on these national exams that have strict regulations.

When someone has done a minor mistake, many people advise to not get involved. However, the way you describe it, this guy has the potential to be really dangerous. One day he is going to pretend he is a doctor and try to do surgery.

I would first contact the HEAD of the guidance office with your concerns. They can make sure that any statement that goes out from the school warns the college of his pattern of behavior. Colleges want to know about these patterns, and if they find out the guidance office is covering up things that the colleges need to know, that could hurt the chances of future applicants from that high school.

If you need to take it a step further, you can contact the admissions office of some of the colleges. I would send a signed letter with your name and address, as opposed to an anonymous tip that looks like it is from a rival.

The next step would be to report it to the College Board. They treat cheating on their tests very seriously.

If he has gotten caught cheating before (which is quite likely since you say that he cheats quite often) and has received honor code violations, then many colleges won’t accept him anyway.

Lol… >.< this is a very confusing conversation now. Everyone’s saying different things. It’s all insightful though,

@blueiguana: It’s true this has nothing to do with me personally, but our school does get limited for admission from colleges, especially from the good ones. And They’re asking me to be the ratter because if they do it in their name, then they’ll look bad er sumthing to that college that they themselves are appling to.

@theRADtomato47: ahaha I agree with you there. I don’t really care that much about ratting, but the fact that the teacher did it is what gets me mad. He and the teacher have apparantly known each other for quite a while, so it’s even more fishy. But we’re scared of telling this to our principal, he’s also our GC, because we found out about it in a kindof “illegal” way. lol, thank you though. You gave me quite a bit to think about.

Oh, FYI. >>> My friend read the letter on the computer the teacher saved it in. She was curious what the teacher would write for such a bad student. (she’s kinda nosy  )

@Drelnis: lol yea, so my principal is the GC. And it’s a christian private schoo, so both looking at things we aren’t supposed to and lieing is something very frowned upon by our principal. So the students were thinking of just going directly to the colleges to avoid drama.

@R3d3mpti0n: Yea I totally agree. I honestly think he’ll probably fail out of college and just wreak himself in the future with they things he’ll continue to do. But this time, it’s his actions affecting the admissions for other students at our school. I would’ve let this go if it wasn’t for that. Although his GPA may be low, its only a little lower than the other kids and his SAT is WAYYY higher then theirs.

@Swimmer726: Yea, I agree. I think if the colleges look closely, they’ll know he’s lying. I’m thinking of ratting him out after he gets at acceptance letter or sumthing, but my friend want me to do it right now so it wont mess up their chances for admission.

@UVAorBust: I know what you’re probably thinking, but don’t take me the wrong way. me and my friends are only thinking of ratting him out because he’s taking away chances from the honest students who deserve to go the college instead of him and his cheating.

@theRADtomato47: Yea i know. this is really risky >.< that’s why I’m tring to get some insight before I choose what to do. I’m scared that something will happen to me and if what I do will just be ignored.

Lol. You’re right on there about being resentful. I realllly don’t like this GUY, he’s cheated off my tests and all this other stuff that I just really don’t like him for doing, ahaha I won’t go any further cuz it’ll turn into a lonnng rant.

Ahhhh. how he cheated on the AP exam… well honestly I can even cheat if I wanted to risk it, if i did it the way he did. So here’s what he did,(got this all from kids I know at the places he took his test)… The AP exam: he signed up to take it at a public school, instead of at our school in order to do this. He apparantly “paid” a couple kids at this public school to help him cheat. These kids pass around “scratch paper” wih answers on it. (they help eachother on different subjects, one would be like a geniuos in math but suck in history, so he gives out math answers and gets history in return)

This school is really ghetto. The teachers dont do anything. They just sit in the front until time is up. (All the kids are squished into the gym for the AP test) so it’s really easy to cheat.

And the SAT’s there’s alot of rumors of how he did it. From what I heard, he used a system of seating arrangement where he and a “paid” tutor would take the test in the same room, they take it as stand-by, and the tutor takes the SAT using the GUY’s name, and the GUY takes it using the tutor’s name. He did something like this on the SAT II’s too. This way, he can’t really get caught by collegeboard. One of my friends already tried ratting him out, but the only thing collegeboard did was hold his scores for like a month then released it after he cried on the phone begging them that he didn’t cheat.

@charlieschm: Yea, I’m really planning on contacting the admissions office of the colleges he applied to. But do you know if it’ll be like a stain on me, for using my name, or anything. That’s what I’m mostly worried about. I’m really scared that doing this will somehow hurt my admissions, even though I’m not appling to any of these colleges.

Ahhaa. yea like a said in the last post. Kids actually did try reporting, but collegeboard didn’t really do anything about it.

It was really scetchy though, he got a 1530 on his first SAT, then he suddenly got a 2370 on his next one. I don’t know why Collegeboard didn’t do anything.

GAHH. He’s uber rich too, so he’s been paying people to help him cheat.

AHHHH, lol I’m still where i was yesterday. I’m not sure what to do. Should I rat him out, or just let it go and hope the colleges will deal with if appropriatly.

But I’m really worried because the big thing he lied on was the teacher recs. Since its from the “teacher”, what if the colleges think it’s true. I heard stories of teachers lieing against students so they’re purposely sabotoging their chances, so there’s probably been teachers who lied for the student so they get accepted too right?

AHHHHH~~~ I really don’t know. I might just realy bring it up with my principal then. I’m close to him so hopefully he’ll understand me for my actions. >.< hopefully.

Lol another thing about this teacher:
I honestly thought this teacher was legit until i asked him to read over my college essays and he told me, upfront, to flat out lie on it instead of using the things I wrote. Now that’s really SKETCHY. -____-" I never went back to him again after this.

He’s a graduate from Harvard, and is like super “intelligent” er sumthing. But he sucks at teaching. He’s a new teacher this year, he got introduced to our school by that GUY. This teacher just pretty much reads off a study guide for like 20 mins and leaves the students to do their “homework” for the rest of the period (1hr 10 mins). The principal already yelled at him a bunch of time about his teaching style and stuff. There’s a rumor going around our school that he’s getting fired at the end of the semester (YAY), but then again, it’s just a rumor.

sigh. just thought you guys should know a bit more about the teacher who lied on the rec letter for the GUY.

Well, anyways. Thanks a bunches for all your insights. It was really interesting to see what other’s though about this situation. I look forward to more opinions~

Thank you!!!
