On of our dc mentioned that, having lived in a dorm for high school, she would like to find a college that has some type of housing option for freshman that is different from the typical dorm...for instance 'house' type of living. This is not, of course, a top priority..but a nice to have.

Wondering if any of your kids are thinking that another 4 years of dorm life, after bs would not be particularly fun?

T

...oh and yes, we have reminded her that many seniors and some juniors get apartments off campus.

If not an alternative type of housing to a dorm, being able to get a single was a plus.
Mandatory meal plan as a freshman has been more of an issue than another year in a dorm.

Yes, my DC also mentioned that she’s so over living in a dorm. After freshman year of college she will most likely find an apartment off campus.

DS doesn’t mind dorm living, but has sworn off roommates! I allowed him to opt for a single for freshmen year, with the understanding that he will pay the price differential between a single and a double with his summer earnings.

I wasn’t “over” dorm life after boarding school at all, possibly because I had singles my last 2 years in BS.

Where I went to college the dorms were a big part of the school culture especially for freshman, which affects my opinion on this, but in general I would say that living in the dorms as a college freshman is a very important part of the college experience and getting integrated into the school. Boarding school is such an intense experience that it can be a hard adjustment to be in college, where you have to work a little harder to gain the same sense of community and belonging.

There are some plus sides to coming into college dorms from boarding school. For one thing, you quickly become the one who knows all the ins and outs of living away from home in a dorm. Plus, needless to say college dorms are a much less controlled environment than boarding school dorms. I’ll just say that it’s a lot more fun there, and leave it at that…
