It’s not hard to make friends. Obviously diversity is a has a huge impact at NYU and that holds true for people’s interests. There will undoubtedly be people who will have common interests with you whether you meet them in class or in one of NYU’s hundreds of clubs. NYU also organizes a lot of student meetings and activities.

In general the campus itself is very safe. There are safety officers for every building. During the day it is safe but if you are on campus late at night and are going back to your dorm or something maybe take a cab or walk back with some friends. Just be smart.

A fair amount of people do have trouble making friends, but I think most do fine with it, anything bellow 14th street and west of 2nd ave is really fine at anytime of day/night, I mean Manhattan in general is a really safe place for being so big (in terms of murder statistics I don’t think the city even ranks in the top 30 or 40). Like the previous poster said just be smart aka don’t venture into the Bronx

The murder rate was the lowest it has ever been in 2009.
The crime rate is about equal to that of Boise, Idaho.
When you put it into perspective, New York City is really one of the safest large cities you can be in. Just don’t wander around alone at night and be AWARE in the rougher parts of town-- you’ll be fine.
