Is there free Wi-Fi, or will I have to supply my own?

There is wifi all over campus.

As for the college question, the answer is which ever one you are in.

Do the upperclassmen hate the underclassmen? I hear that some universities have that issue.

Oh, and Antarius, this is really random but you are very wise.

You hear some interesting things. I have never heard of this, and it is definitely not true. The best part of the college system is that each college has a quarter freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior residents. There are no ‘freshman-only’ dorms. All the classes mingle freely and get to know each other from day one.

Upperclassmen also want to be on campus for oweek as advisers (it is quite competitive to get a spot) as well.

All the colleges are equal, but Hanszen is more equal than the others.

Really though, whatever college you are in will be the best one to you.

And no, the upperclassmen for the most part love the underclassmen. And the ones that don’t are indifferent to them, in that they don’t pay any attention to that.

Ah ok. The showers and bathrooms aren’t co-ed, right? Please forgive me if this was ask/answered earlier.

And I like the Orwell reference, FallenAngel9. :)

Correct. In some cases, you may even be in a suite or room with your own bathroom. There are no co-ed bathrooms to my knowledge.

Yeah, I’m fairly certain none of the bathrooms are co-ed. Unless you are rooming with a member of the opposite sex and have your own bathroom.

Is it better to have a Mac or PC at Rice, in terms of compatibility issues? I’m getting a new laptop soon and don’t know which I should pick.

Whichever you’re more comfortable with. Honestly. I’m an engineer with a Mac (I’m not alone) and have never had any issues. You should choose whichever platform is right for you. In other words, if you have used PCs your whole life and have no intention of switching (or Macs), then there is really no reason to.

To add, none of the bathrooms are co-ed for sure. As for a computer, pick one. I had both. As a engineer, the mac had some issues (the version of fortran compiler we had did not run on a mac) but otherwise it was ok.

The route I’m probably gonna go is bring my mac(I’ve grown accustomed to it and don’t feel the need to get specifically a windows laptop) and then run Windows through Bootcamp, an app that basically lets you run 2 different operating systems on your mac.

@tart121993: That sounds like a great idea.

@Antarius: Ok, I’ll pick one eventually.

@adamb529: I’ve never, ever owned a Mac but have been thinking about switching over to one for several months. I’m sick of PCs, and the one I have right now has really left a bad taste in my mouth. I think I’ll make the big switch.

Thanks guys!

Ok, another question: Can the meal plan be used for any of the cafeterias, or is it cafeteria-specific?

You can eat at any servery you like. There are six serveries: North, East, West, South, Baker, and SidRich. Each servery serves 2-3 colleges, with Baker and Sid having their own, smaller serveries. However, like I said, you can go to any servery you want to eat. All you have to do is swipe your Rice ID. The menus for each servery are posted online, as well.

How good is the food?

Do you see a lot of owls in the trees?

Is there cable?

What are the options for transportation?

Is it true that you can have lunch outside with the professors?

~Please excuse me for sounding like a typical Freshman-To-Be.~

I really enjoy the food. It’s essentially restaurant quality. The only complaint I hear my friends make is that it gets boring and monotonous (aren’t we Owls spoiled haha). I agree that it can get monotonous, if you let it. With a little effort you can avoid this, though, and it’s definitely worth it. Mixing up your choice of servery will help.

I personally haven’t seen any, but I never look up. I’ve had several friends who’ve spotted Owls throughout the semester though.

Yes, there is a basic cable program with some HD channels.

There are shuttles that run through the Inner Loop; I’m not sure how often, but it seems frequent enough. During the first week or so in August they’ll run to Target every day, and during the semester they run to Target on Saturdays until early afternoon. There is also a light rail that can take you downtown, which you get a free pass for from Rice (although I actually still haven’t picked mine up, fail).

Naturally! A lot of professors are also associates at one of our residential colleges, so they will come to eat with students a lot. If you want to eat outside with one, ask them. Alternately, you can ask one of your professors. I ate lunch with my class, my professor, and the author of a book we were reading in the faculty cafeteria one day. It was really awesome.

You’re fine haha, everyone passes through this stage! Hopefully my answers helped.

This is absolutely key. Different serveries tend to be quite different in the types of food they offer. Learning what days which serveries offer epic food (like cinnamon rolls at West) is also helpful.

I think you can also pay for additional channels.

Gotta love when they start getting two shuttles back-to-back, though…
