Life Plans lol

Does anyone know of any BA/MA programs at Yale for Sociology? I know they have one for MM (music) and one for political science but I can’t find one for sociology. I plan on doing a BA/MA sociology program, then a doctorate program in sociology as well. Planning to become a professor.

This isn’t what you asked at all but I’m going to give you the same advice that my advisor gave me as a sociology undergrad. You are much better served by getting your undergrad, masters and doctorate degrees from different schools. You want, and need, to be exposed to different viewpoints and different specialties within the field. The best way possible to accomplish that is by taking advantage of relationships with as many different faculty members as you can, not by limiting yourself to the ones at your undergrad institution.

This really helped. What I want from undergrad is different than what I want in my higher education afterwords. Thank you.

Also after you get a bachelor’s consider finding a funded program, often a PhD that includes a master’s along the way will be funded.

Why do you want to be a professor? Would you also consider teaching high school? And why sociology? A lot of high school students have life plans but they tend to change…

I want to be a professor rather than a high school teacher because the job market when it comes to sociology related teaching positions is much wider, and the curriculum of a university class compared to that of a high school class is better suited for me. Although, I would teach a high school class if I had the chance. As for sociology, it is perfect for me. Analyzing societal structures, how society functions, societal norms, organizations and institutions, etc. I’ve never been much of a studious student (always got good grades in high level classes, but never studied) but when it comes to sociology, I spend so much time on studying and learning from it. I am actually passionate about sociology and all branches of it, and there’s nothing else I genuinely have passion in. I am also privileged enough to not have to worry about the financial aspect of jobs due to my family’s socioeconomic status, so I can pursue what interests me.

Have you been accepted to Yale for undergrad?

I am glad your motivation is not financial! You might be able to avoid traveling around for adjunct positions that don’t pay well, and if you are indeed going to a well-regarded school like Yale that may help too. Teaching is a calling but of course academia wants research and publication and it sounds like you are well-suited.

If you will be a Yale freshman in fall 2022, I would urge you to keep an open mind about your potential major and career. Yes, it’s possible you will pursue something related to sociology…but really, Yale coursework…you might find something that piques your interest more. Or where you wish to continue your studies after your bachelors.

It looks like Yale’s post bachelors program is a doctorate…not a masters.

Congratulations on your acceptance.
