@PsychBruin2012: Y u no SocBear2012?

Your application looks strikingly familiar! Yeah, fortunately this major isn’t impacted here at Cal. You’ll probably be seeing the same people from time to time in some (if not ALL) of your classes.

I LOVE SOCIOLOGY HERE! Say farewell to expensive textbooks, because upper division Soc classes use general reading books you’re able to buy ANYWHERE! These books can still get a little expensive, but they’re nothing compared to textbooks. We also have readers for not only soc, but EVERY class here at Berkeley. Readers are just photocopied collections of articles your professor puts together in the form of a book -_________- they’re always sideways so that they fit. EYES, prepare yourself.

I’ve enjoyed every single class I’ve taken!..except Soc 5 ://// Sooooo many statistical concepts/theories. Linus Huang is a cool professor! His lectures can SOMETIMES go a bit dry, but that’s because he really encourages class participation and not too many people are just aching in their seats to participate. Barrie Thorne is retiring after this semester :[ she was a good one. Dylan Riley is BRILLIANT…but his class is terrifying if you aren’t prepared to have an Ivy League education.

I should probably note that you’re going to be running into A LOT more take-home midterms and finals. I personally love them since I can write a paper and not have to worry about memorizing information! However, the amount of papers and readings you will have as a Sociology major is RIDICULOUS! I average about 4-8 papers and 3-6 books + reader per class and the papers can span anywhere from 4-15 PAGES! The capstone seminar has a mandatory minimum of 20 pages I think, but no need to worry about that until Senior/4th year. :)

Dear EVERYONE,

A lot of you have been PMing my CC account about my email either not working or receiving no response from me. I APOLOGIZE! Huge grammatical error on my part! My email is actually…

Cal.OUAmbassador@g mail . com

Hopefully I can now answer all your questions more efficiently! :)

thank you for doing this.

hows the food at cal?
hows the weather? in comparison to south cali
what were some of the classes that you really enjoyed and would rec to future cal students?

Thanks for doing this GoldenBears, it’s extremely helpful just to have someone on here that’s already gone through the process and dealt with the same things that we are dealing with and will have to deal with in the future.

My one question is if you have any insight as to how the science classes are at Berkeley? I know you’re a sociology major so it’s doubtful you’d have to take any biology, chemistry, or physics courses, but I’m sure you’ve run into more than a few science majors in your time there so my question is what have you heard about their experience? Do they generally complain about their classes or are they more enthusiatic? Are they constantly busy studying and with labs? If you know any transfer students how would they compare their lab classes from CC to Berkeley? I’ve heard a lot of stories about how science labs are insanely competitive at Berkeley and UCLA and how some people go to questionable lengths to not only help themselves but sabotage other students. Is this true?

It’s interesting how most of the students that comeback on CC and do these types of threads are always social science majors. I’m starting to think all the science transfers are insanely busy with research projects and working in labs day and night for upper division courses. Lol. Anyway, any insight would be appreciated. I applied to Cal as a Integrative Biology major and a lot of the information you’ve provided already has been very helpful, just wondering if you knew anything a little more specific to my major that could help me out in the future.

hey goldenbears,

Your awesome for answering our questions. Can i email you so you can chance me i feel a bit embarrassed posting my stats here others(other CCers) are so impressive :-/

also is interdisciplinary studies at Berkeley impacted? Last question if were not admitted directly to our major are we up against everyone in Letters and science or only those in our major and how do we declare our majors once were admitted?

thankss

Golden Bears: Thank you so much. You are absolutely amazing. When will you be graduating?

@dilapidatedmind: Either the bio and hard science disciplines are busier, or the social sciences are better at interacting with throngs of anxious transfer students ^_^

Hey Everyone! I decided to take yesterday off after my math midterm.
-_______- Who would have thought Math 136: Incompleteness and Undecidability would NOT be as fun as it sounds.

Anyway, let’s see if I can answer all your questions in one HUGE response!

Food at Cal is interesting on-campus and can be DELICIOUS when near/in the Asian or Gourmet Ghettos! One of my favorites comes from House of Curries directly across the street from the Asian Ghetto! The chicken tikka masala & garlic naan are ridiculously addicting! Also, boba milk drinks are EVERYWHERE! My favorites are Sweetheart’s and Quickly’s! Cheap too at $2-2.50 for a LARGE! If you have meal points and want something that does the job, I guess Crossroads is satisfying. I’ve only been there a few times though – the novelty wears off when everything starts tasting the same ://

[Cal Dining](http://caldining.berkeley.edu/)

As for weather -______- if only I knew how to post pictures, I would show you a screenshot of the 24hr rain that’s been going on for a week now! All of my shoes are soaking wet! I’ll be home & back in the sun in T-minus 8 days.

Some of the greatest classes you can take are the 1-2 unit Decals! You can learn how to solve the rubix cube or help to keep Strawberry Creek clean

@uctransfer2012: Feel free to email me anything you would want to know more about! I’m sure your application is equally as impressive.

As for the Interdisciplinary Studies and Integrative Biology majors here – You’re admitted to the college of L&S, but ONLY competing with those in the same department  (i.e. there will be no English and Molecular & Cell Biology applicants fighting for the same spot!) There are various majors within IS, but the only one that’s impacted is Media Studies (formerly Mass Communications). IB is a different story. lol yeah, I have ran into TONS of IB and MCB majors…even became close friends with 2 IB nerds. They’re awesome. We had a talk about how everyone thinks students in the sciences are always out for blood! When really they’re just like everyone else. Although they study ALL WEEK until sometimes 5 in the morning, they party in the city every weekend! I don’t know how they do it 8l

Now let’s take a moment to talk about the infamous pre-med students who you’re referring to. THESE STUDENTS…can be ape-s#it CRAZY! They are more likely to be MCB, but WILL be enrolling in your classes. ENJOY!

Because most science class grades are curved, students are trying to stay ABOVE the average, which is where the cutthroat rumors stem from – leading to the notion that one must eliminate all competition to survive.

Don’t do this – we’re in Berkeley, not Sparta.

In short, science will always be hard, but you’ll make it out with some of your sanity intact. Labs and keeping up with your manuals will probably be the most challenging part. Students use old write-ups from past students who have already been through the class.

Best of luck!

@justinetruant: Well said! :]

Hi (:
I’m going to apply to Cal as a Comparative Literature major this year, but I’m also interested in the Media Studies major which I already have all the prerequisites completed for too. If I am admitted but decide I want to become a Media Studies major instead of Comparative Lit, how difficult would it be to switch majors during the first semester?

With campus housing is so outrageous, how difficult would it be to find a roommates to live near campus? any suggestions for alternate housing?

I want to go to UC Berkeley if given the opportunity. They are such a great institution at recrruiting. Go Golden Bears. Sorry UCLA, leave my meds there.

Mmm chicken tikki masala from House of Curries. I had that exact meal, with naan, of course, the first night I was checking out the school, staying with a friend.

I saw your preferences for the off-campus housing but I was wondering would you recommend those over an apartment?

Hi could you answer few of my questions? :)

I’m definitely gearing towards the art field. Visual and fine arts. So how is the art department in ucb? (From your point of view, is it active? good quality?)

Do number of AP classes I take matter? Would more number of AP classes make me more attractive in my application?

What did you wirite on your application?(ex: apscores, gpa, volunteer work, sat scores, etc)

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks so much!!
