Lightspeed, Lt. Uhura

Nichelle Nichols, the actress that portrayed Lt. Uhura on Star Trek, passed away.

She had the groundbreaking role of a Black woman in a position of authority. When I was a child watching Star Trek, I didn’t notice the significance of this, but I fully appreciate it now. Kudos to the Star Trek writers for their vision.

Have you seen Star Trek, Strange New Worlds on Paramount+, with a young cadet Uhura?

She was indeed.

She definitely was a pioneer. RIP.

So many actors from my youth have passed away recently. It’s another one of those things that remind me that I won’t be on this earth forever. Gotta get the good living in while we can.

Incredible story about her here…”we’re here in the 23rd century!” MLK Jr.

May her memory be for a blessing.

I’m so sad to hear that. She was 89. Star Trek reallly was a “color blind” show. Great lessons about people and morals when I look back on it. Of course I watched it because it was sci-fi and just a great show!

We also lost Bill Russell today. A pioneer as an Olympian, an NBA player, and as the first Black head coach in a major US sports league.

Two Black legends who both broke through barriers dying on the same day. How sad.
