Like Blair Academy, but further north?

We love Blair for DS (academic rigor, but not overwhelming; friendly and playful student body; has skiing, tennis, and baseball; they seem to really know the students; lots of leadership opportunities), but DS and DH think it is too far away from our home in NH. Can anyone recommend schools with a similar feel in MA, NH, VT, or ME?

NMH offers those sports. Difference is student body size. 650 at NMH. NMH seems to fit the mold

Thank you! That will definitely be on the list. The larger student body is not a worry. He is actually only resistant to very small schools.

New Hampton might be worth a look if he doesn’t find it too small.

Holderness?

Brewster Academy?

Governor’s and St. Mark’s both seemed to have high happiness factor and nice kids. When we visited pre-covid kids did not give the socially competitive vibe, seemed very friendly and warm. They have strong academics and sports, but seem balanced.

Are you willing to go into CT or NY? Suggest you look at Canterbury (CT), Trinity-Pawling (NY, but just over the CT border- all boys), Millbrook (NY), and/or Berkshire (MA). All have well-balanced, happy kids. Not sure about skiing for all of them, but that’s an easy search.

I concur. I went to Govs and my son considered it this year, so became reacquainted. The people there are amazing, warm and friendly. They’re doing good things in Byfield.

That’s great to hear about Governor’s. We will definitely check it out. Thank you!

We have friends who adore St. Mark’s, but alas, there is no ski team.

I love Berkshire (like, really love), but it’s farther than DS and DH want to go. I might force them to check it out anyway. If they open up the range, we will check out the others you suggested. Thank you.

I would also look at Suffield - it has all teams and qualities described in your original post and while it’s technically in CT, it’s about 3 min from Mass.

I suppose a lot has to do with how far north you are in NH. Canterbury and Trinity-Pawling are about 3 hours or so from the Nashua area. Good luck!!
