Likelihood of fewer Alumni Interviewers for this year's applicants

I'm an interviewer for my HYP alma mater. I just got word from our area coordinator that we have 500 applications to be spread amoug 41 active alumni volunteer interviewers. An impossible task.

In years past we used to interview up to 95% of applicants and were among the highest in the country. That goal is now out the window -- the new reality given the ballooning of apps in our area.

The real possibility of a not being contacted for an alum interview is higher than ever, these days. (at least for my college -- I suspect this may hold true across the board, however)

Students should take note: apps aren't pre-sorted whatsoever for my school. This is the case with most schools that offer interviews. If the coordinators know nothing about you and if you're assigned an interviewer or not, it's not any indicator of your eventual outcome.

Any effort on the U’s part to get more alumni interviewing?

I have also been an alumni interviewer for Duke and have noted the increase in recent years in interview requests. I have twins applying to colleges this year, so I am not eligible to interview this class and I am not familiar with how this year looks. However, neither of my twins has yet been contacted by Duke for interviews. This might just mean that the alumni association is running slightly behind schedule, or it might be more evidence supporting your theory that interviewers are swamped.
