Likelihood of Fewer Alumni Interviews for Class of 2013 Seniors

I just got word from our area coordinator that we have 500 applications to be spread amoug 41 active alumni volunteer interviewers. An impossible task.

In years past we used to interview up to 95% of applicants and were among the highest in the country. That goal is now out the window -- the new reality given the ballooning of apps in our area.

The real possibility of a not being contacted for an alum interview is higher than ever, these days.

Students should take note: apps aren't pre-sorted whatsoever. The coordinators know nothing about you so if you're assigned an interviewer or not, it's not any indicator of your eventual outcome.

Ds was just asking about this. He sent in his app a week ago. What is the the timeframe during which he should expect to hear should he get an interview at all? We don’t answer a lot of calls if we don’t recognize the number …

I’d say now thru mid Feb. Our write up deadlines are end of Feb. However, last minute requests from New Haven for specific un-interviewed students can occasionally happen into March.

I wouldn’t alter your phone habits. People will leave a voicemail, email separately or even text your son if he submitted his cell phone no.

May I ask in what order you interview your assigned applicants? Alphabetically, perhaps?

Mostly random. Names come in lists from New Haven based on completion verification of the application file. Then they are matched geographically with volunteers in our metro area.

Do you mind saying how big the radius is that you are covering?

I’m asking because I live in a rural place, so I’m wondering how far I can go to an interview.

I second MeIsHM, I live in rural Iowa and I really would like an interview.

I live in a midwest city metro area. Outlying rural areas (1hr + drive) aren’t covered by us.

There are alumni interviewers in some random rural areas. You could get lucky and have an interviewer in or near your rural location.

Some major cities have multiple interviewing regions controlled by different volunteer coordinators, each with their own corps of interviewers. Less populated states have the entire state as a single interviewing territory. Some countries are coordinated by a single volunteer. It really varies by location. I’ve read on CC of applicants in Europe taking multi-hour train trips to make it to an alumni interview.

Hmm that’s interesting because I’m from Europe. I really hope I get an interview.

Woohoo! Ds just got an interview request!

For instance…

My D is in graduate school in Ann Arbor. We live on the east side of Detroit. D is an interviewer for the east side of Detroit, as there is more than sufficient coverage in Ann Arbor. So far she has done 3 SCEA interviews around Thanksgiving and 4 RD interviews last weekend, with more RD interviews to come.
