Likely Letter at D1 Ivy

Basic Ivy recruiting question: if ivy likely letters come out in early October, theoretically that would allow a recruit to apply ED at another school if they don’t get a likely letter, yes?

^ Yes, theoretically. But in practice I don’t know if that ever really happens. Mostly knowing that the LL will come early enough to go to a backup is a nice comfort for recruits and parents (and a good rationale to encourage GCs to get the application materials in early).

ETA: not all letters come in early Oct, btw. It depends when the app is submitted. It’s pretty common for athletes to take visits into early Oct, submit an app mid Oct or later, get a LL late Oct or into Nov.

In general, if the recruit did not apply ED/SCEA, a Likely Letter will not be forthcoming. If the recruit did apply ED, and did not get a LL in October, they could switch the application to RD and apply to another college ED.

I agree with politeperson- i think it’s a possibility. It’s nice to know that there is still a good option if things don’t work out.

On the other hand- the likely letter process at (at least ) one ivy is very backed up due to the new process this fall. The new process was prompted by the admission scandal from last year. So, yes, in theory if my DD didn’t get the likely letter she could still apply to another school but there was not much time left by the time she got her likely. She just got hers this week- three weeks after we thought she will get hers. It all worked out for us, but it was a long three weeks!
