When are likely letters usually sent out?

Just wondering when ivy's usually send out likely letters to athletic recruits? If anyone has been recruited, when did you receive yours?
Any answers are appreciated.

Around now to November I believe.

The LL was offered on 10/30 and actually arrived 12/2. The wait was agonizing.

Waiting for mine right now; got my application in on 10/6 and recent indication from coaches suggests I will get mine on 10/29 or 11/5. The wait isn’t so bad honestly, though I guess it’s definitely important to have your admittance in written form.

Is “getting a LL” same as “committing to a school”? I feel like there’s this lingo only the initiated understand…it’s like being pinned…Anyway, here’s what I know: a girl on D’s XC/track team “committed to Princeton” mid-Nov last year. A HS senior committed to Yale end of August. Another HS senior is “in” at Harvard as of September.

Wow! The girl who committed to the Princeton team last year - what grade was she in at that time?

You can search and find a lot of info on LL’s. Basically, in the Ivy League the athlete has to be cleared with admissions. That generally happens in the fall-winter of senior year through the Likely Letter. Early ‘commitments’ are not assured but according to reports here, generally work out as well.

From our experience you have to talk to the coach and “ask” for a likely letter. I don’t think they are automatically given out. DD loved her first choice school on her OV and told the coach it was her first choice but needed to visit 2nd Ivy to be sure before she "committed/asked. She received her LL (email from admissions) 3 days after asking/committing (her completed app had been in since Sept. 1). LL arrived snail mail on Oct. 12. We/she look at this as a committment from both sides. Her to the school and the school to her. Cancelled all other OV visits. No “footsies” under the table. 2nd Ivy was pushing her to ask for the LL but would not initiate it until she said “go” which of course she did not.

No
Not nearly the same thing…
Verbals are not LLs
There is lots of info here on this forum to explain the LL process.

Verbals aren’t the same as LLs. Generally, though, if you verbal you’ve already discussed with the coach thoroughly about the LL process (and I would be weary if the coach talks about a verbal without bringing up the LL process).

^^Monstor344 - I do love your (subconscious?!) typo - yes, one does indeed get weary of having to be wary of coaches/verbals/LLs…:)

Can LL’s be given throughout the year or are they only given in conjuction with ED apps?

Keylyme - they can be given later. Know of a couple of athletes who received LL’s after the holidays, though I’d guess that’s less common.

LLs can be given by a school without EA/ED to hold on to a student who is being offered an LL by a school that HAS EA/ED. It would make sense for them to do this in October so that the student would not submit the ED to the competing school. It levels the playing field so that top student athletes can negotiate with all schools at the same time and seal a mutual commitment (the LL).

I guess the point of the later (post Nov 1) LL would be to hold on to an athlete who might also be looking at other leagues. An LL in January would stop the recruit from signing an LOI with a DI non-Ivy in February, for example.

Not so much subconscious as a complete mix-up in words, but heck I do agree now that I think about it! Coaches’ ambiguity drives one insane.

Riverrunner & Keylyme - just a point of clarification in response to this thought, “I guess the point of the later (post Nov 1) LL would be to hold on to an athlete who might also be looking at other leagues. An LL in January would stop the recruit from signing an LOI with a DI non-Ivy in February, for example,” - I don’t think the later LL’s are only given to prevent a recruit from signing with a non-Ivy. In the instances I’m aware of, a recruit was given a LL in Jan or Feb in order to prevent him from accepting a LL from another Ivy during that same time frame. So for athletes who don’t make a commitment in the fall, the same issues are at play later - e.g. coaches wanting to get athletes locked up and athletes wanting a guarantee if they are willing to commit. Again, I think fewer LL’s are offered in this time frame than in the fall, but just want to let other recruits know that it does happen.

Yes, thanks for pointing that out, Runners2. I should just give up posting after 10 PM. It never comes out quite right…

^ all good points. There is so much on this board about the LLs. The most important thing parents and athletes need to know is that after that OV when your student verbals, it’s Admissions who gives the LL. The coach can have the impression it will be fine–and a pre-read may have been done–
Coaches can select their potential team, however Admissions admits…

I think that often kids and parents mistakenly think that a kid “verballing” in jr yr means they are “in”…that was my point…and that verbally and discussing a LL does not mean the kid has the LL…

There is a wealth of information on this forum to be read that helps give parents/students more information…

"There is a wealth of information on this forum to be read that helps give parents/students more information… " Absolutely, fogfog! There is such a steep learning curve for recruits and their families! Most of us benefited from the experience of others when we were helping our athletes negotiate the process and are hoping to make the same contributions to another group of recruits now. Good luck everyone!

^ So true
We have benefitted so much by the generous time and patience of the pioneers before us. Several people here on the Ath Recruit boards have helped us know what path to take–
Almost all of the guidance we have gotten for athletic recruiting, apps, OVs etc and the process in general has come from parents here on CC. We have been careful to “vett” who we took advice from and their track record so to speak…

So thankful for everyone’s help…

Funny how our scholar-athlete attended some seminar at school with the GCs…and said–they didn’t tell them anything that “we didn’t already know from CC” :D
