Congrats to everyone who received likely letters to Penn! I've noticed threads like this for several other schools, so I figured I would start one here. Everyone who didn't get one (and students applying next year) would love to see what your stats are to see what it takes to become one of the few lucky likely candidates, so please post them here if you don't mind!

I too, would very much like to see stats. :)

SAT: 2370 (800 CR, 770 M, 800 W)
SAT II: 790 Literature, 760 Math II, 740 US History. But because they don’t do Score Choice they also saw some icky ones like 640 Bio E and 670 Math I and 680 Chemistry…

AP Scores: 5s on AP US History, AP European History, and AP English Language.

I’ve won national medals, attended Junior National Team ID camps, and I train three seasons a year. I’m a varsity captain during the scholastic season, and I do club rowing in the fall. I was not recruited, though.).
Work/Volunteer: Mostly babysitting, some paid computer work. No appreciable community service.
Awards: National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar, Cum Laude Society
Gender: F
Race: White
School: Small independent school in Philadelphia that usually sends from 1-4 girls to Penn each year (out of a class of 50-70).
Essays: I thought both were very good. My Penn supplement in particular was quite strong.
Interview: I was never contacted for one, despite my living 30 minutes away from campus. I was freaking out about not getting one right up until I got the likely email last night.

I have lots of legacy (brother, parent, two grandparents). Even if that doesn’t count in the RD round (which is what I’ve heard many times), it does give me a significant degree of familiarity with the school, and I think that this made my “Why Penn?” essay very compelling. As a Philly resident, I’ve been able to spend a lot of time on and around the campus, and I’ve been able to get to know the departments I’m interested in (Linguistics and Computer Science) by attending various olympiads, lectures, and symposia when they’re open to the public. Basically, I think I was able to present a very good case for myself–I talked about seeing the Penn crew every day on the river, I’m proactive about getting involved with things that Penn hosts for high school students, etc. Also, I think Penn has a Philadelphia quota :p

Got a likely letter last night! Applied to CAS.

My son did not get a likely letter for CAS in spite of 2400 SAT, 3.8, 5.2 weighted in full IB program at well know public high school. Above 780-800 on 3 SAT2’s (physics, French, math 2). 3 AP’s so far - all 5’s. ECs: Volunteering, and some minor clubs. Worried.

I wouldn’t worry. Not getting a likely letter simply means that your son isn’t an all-star D1 athlete/At the top top top of the applicant pool. It’s really not a cause for concern, I’m sure that, given the scores, he has a great shot. Keep in mind, liklies don’t go to the best scorers; they go to the “ideal” candidates. don’t stress (easier said than done).

I did not get any likely letter from any college.
Also, I was not contacted for a Penn alum interview.

My stat: 800-780-800(12)/35/ 800-780-800.
No hook, CAS applicant.

Hope for some good news in late March!

From my observations the vast majority of likely letters for elite schools go to athletes, urms, quest bridge and other very low income type kids, and geographic diversity cases. If you are not one of these you need to wait for decisions on march 30 with the rest of us… The one exception I have seen is Yale likely letters to science and engineering types as part of their recruiting initiatives.

There was an article in the Daily Pennsylvanian that said that likely letters also helped recruit for underrepresented majors such as physics and chemistry.

Hm, you think they would consider BBB (biological basis of behavior) underrepresented?

No not all, that is a very common major especially among pre-meds. Physics and Chemistry only have about 15 students a year on average.

Would Theatre be considered an underrepresented major?

Wharton likelies what are your stats?

Did internationals receive likelies too?

For my D:
Received likely letter to UPenn last week.
College of Arts & Sciences
SAT: 2320
SAT IIs: 800,790,760,760,750
8 AP exams taken so far (received 5s on all)
12 AP courses taken.
Top 1-2% of about 700 students (school does not rank).
GPA: 3.9/4.4
National Merit Finalist, National Achievement Scholar, National AP Scholar, Varsity athlete, various other science, math, athletic, academic awards/ honors.
Lots of ECs (president and founder of a club and member/officer of a few others)

Congratulations to those who received Likely Letters. Apparently 7-8% of RD acceptees received them. They do lessen your anxiety (so did being accepted ED), but of course it raises the stress level for everyone else-witness the student who felt rejected just because a letter was not received! Also, it’s a marketing tool for Penn and other schools to get you thinking in a positive light about that particular school a few weeks before you get answers from all the others.

Didn’t only 200 kids receive them? How many acceptees are there, generally?
