This may sound a bit silly, but what is a likely letter?

My daughter got letters from Universities she applied to that invited her to accepted students day, about six weeks before she got the official acceptance package. For NYU we were actually in NY for the accepted students day when the acceptance package arrived for her in California. The first one she got was from UCLA Engineering, and I thought it was cute, because it basically said they couldn't wait for the school to send out the notices, they wanted to tell her NOW! (My husband's an engineer, and he tends to give me birthday presents early, because once he has them, he has to give them to me NOW! so I was thinking it was an engineering thing.) And they invited her to engineering accepted students day...

She also got letters or calls from alumni of other universities inviting her to events for their schools before she got acceptance letters. At these events we heard they would stand up and tell everyone they were accepted.

Here's a relevant article from the Yale Daily News:

Very simple. A likely letter is a letter that tells you that " we will most likely admit you to the class of........" You get this letter before May 1st. The language is pretty clear. Some schools send it to legacies, athletes or a few top students.

Letters from alumni, invitations to events, etc are pretty irrelevant.
