Likely letters?

hmmm… it could be possible

“…my name is Manuel Mendoza, which makes me Hispanic.”

This is what I dislike about URM “hook”. Someone whose “name makes them Hispanic” does not truly contribute to a campus’ cultural diversity. Such persons only contribute to appellation diversity. (I’m Hispanic - albeit, dare I say it, in a "truer sense - myself).

Mr. Mendoza:
With the information you have given, I don’t doubt it is possible for you to be admitted to H. However, I would be wildly surprised if you received a LL. I will not say you are a ■■■■■ - that is for you to know. All I am suggesting is that your essays must have put Hemingway to shame if you received an LL.

idk wat is was because i doubt I’ll ever write even half as well as Hemingway. I was widely surprised when I got it myself because I dont believe that my stats are as spectacular as other applicants’ are.

i completely agree with you in regards to the cultural diversity thing – a name alone doesn’t contribute much. I should have worded that better. idk tho too late

nice job dumb butt. you just posted your real first and last name in an internet forum (if that is your name). or may be you just posted that name to make us believe you more when you’re actually lying.

Yayo’s stats could be impressive to Harvard’s eyes. If you take a look at Harvard’s result threads, the school looks for a lot of leadership involvement (especially class presidents). Anyone without a lot of leadership involvement in their EC’s are usually rejected unless they have some other international level awards. Yayo apparently has these leadership positions, is a URM, and is also val; the only reason why he wouldn’t be impressive is his SAT scores, but Harvard takes into account the fact that students from low income families usually don’t perform to their maximum potential on standardized tests.

This is what my interviewer said:

Harvard told everyone that they are looking for one key thing now: “LEADERSHIP”…and then he followed by saying I have leadership (I just smiled  except down in my heart I was jumping for joy)

I can see how he might have gotten a likely. But,it IS frustrating knowing how many people (cough, my daughter) who have better “stats” who really have little to no chance of even being ADMITTED. The hispanic hook? It’s become a BIGGUN, so I hear.

white people have no right to complain about being white. bc they arent Asian, haha

I wouldn’t have doubts if I were to be told that he were admitted, but I don’t see how he could have received a likely letter with his achievements considering the fact that very few are sent out.

Harvard sends out extremely few, and I’m pretty sure there are tons of Hispanics who are more deserving of LL. I mean, a Hispanic valecdictorian who has some sort of leadership position, and above a 34 on the ACT? Not that rare.

And Harvard doesn’t call you. And no one smart enough to get a likely letter would post his/her name on the internet, along with stats that aren’t impressive, especially not on CC.

harvardlite…I hear you.

Congratulations, Yayo. Getting that call is a pretty amazing experience, isn’t it? My daughter’s came from our area Harvard alum rep, who had been called by admissions to tell him that someone in his territory would be getting a letter. He asked her not to tell anyone until the letter actually arrived, so those were several very difficult days with lots of mailbox watching.
After she got the letter, I googled likely letters and found an interview with a student who had gotten an academic likely a couple of years ago. She described her call and said while the rep was telling her she would receive one, her mother was rolling on the floor kicking her feet!! That was kind of how I felt.
She has a school conflict with admitted student days so we have already gone to Cambridge to check it out. It is as wonderful as we thought it would be, even in the snow.
Congrats to you again and best of luck next year.

yayos a ■■■■■. get over it.

People who get LL’s are probably smart enough not to say it over the internet where no one will believe them

Agreed. Or they’re smart enough to be able to substantiate it when asked.

I got my likely letters from Harvard and Princeton in October.
My applications were sent in early September.

And both schools had the regional heads call me, so if anyone is refuting the call theory, it does exist.

^^^ What’d you do for your likely?

SAT: 2300

1 in class.

Top 30 in country (Class of 2010) for my sport.
Editor School Newspaper
Lots of community service
etc.
like the usual harvard applicants haha

Well, the school sent me their academic recruitment papers as well. I was recruited by many schools for both my sport and academics. Regarding academic likelies, I think Harvard gives out 10 to 12 per year. But I know there is a hidden quota for internationals even though they don’t say it.
