hey guys,

am i gonna get my internet access taken if i use limewire to download movies and stuff at ucla???

Ah don't use Limewire in general. It gives your computer STD/STI(s). Use torrents for now.

As for the school-year: DC++ / UCLA Hub . This'll make more sense eventually and generally there were probably be some people on your floor that can help you figure it out.

We (roomies and I) got caught for using torrents. That ended our use of torrents for the year :(.

@Altema:
If you get caught using torrents why would it end your use of it? O_O;

Get caught a second time, and you have to talk to the Dean of Students. You usually get academic probation or something, but they do have the power to make it worse.

Downloading Starcraft via torrent got me caught.

Whoever registers the router for your room gets the warning message. I didn't read it entirely, but my friend did and it said there were some extremes such as expulsion. My roomies and I didn't want to risk that extreme. Although I'm not too sure if expulsion for downloads has ever happened. I certainly didn't want to find out if I would be the first, so we stopped.

darn it...better get all the stuff i can b4 school starts then...

Even high schoolers during summer session can get caught. My neighbors got caught for downloading music and porn. Whether it was actually the music or the porn that got them caught, I'll never know.

so if you register the router and one of your roommates download, you're the one that gets in trouble?

I'm pretty sure it's not as simple as that. It seemed like that would be the case, but I'm sure if the person who registered the router complains that he/she did not do it, UCLA or whoever would investigate further. Otherwise, that sucks for the person who registered the router. :(

if you have a router, password it. you are responsible for WHOEVER is using it to access internet. taht means, if your roomate decides to go onto limewire and download music (using ur router), you will get in trouble.

so do a lot of people get caught? cause I remember at orientation, they scared a lot of people saying that some students were sued by the motion picture company or something like that for a crazy amount of money...

basically I'm asking, what are the chances of getting caught if you dont' do it too often...

HAHA most of my friends who downloaded (off of torrents usually..because they think it's safe) got caught.

The extreme consequences don't seem unreal because it is technically a violation of university policies and that ain't good. I remember seeing an article earlier in the week about Berkeley clamping down on this kind of stuff.

bruinboy - really? that seems kind of harsh. does that mean if I hate my roommate, I could get him in trouble by downloading stuff?

wow. my roommate has been downloading all these movies/songs/programs/whatever and he thinks im going to take the heat for him?

that b*tch

what about having someone download stuff for you and transferring through AIM or something other program?

I don't think anyone's been caught for AIM transfers, as long as you're sending directly to that person.

When you go register your router at STC, you signed an agreement explicitly stating that you would be liable for ANY and ALL traffic going through your router, even if unauthorized users were on it. It was your responsibility to regulate usage of your router via protection.

Silly children, don't the RIAA and MPAA ads scare you enough NOT to do that stuff? ;]

i would like to apologize for the hates i have instigated upon the matter of roomate hating rommates...

now back to gettin' all the stuff i can get...
