DO NOT use UCR's Network for Illegal Downloads

I'm NOT a student, I'm an alumni, and have many friends who works at various UCs. This was posted by my friend who works at UCR's Computing Services as a data & security infrastructure...guy:

"A full week into the Fall Quarter and a couple dozen DMCA complaints for music/movie file sharing. All by students in the dorms. Get ready to meet with Student Conducts personnels"

They do not kid around when it comes to DMCA notices because if the RIAA or MPAA needs to go after someone, they will go to the school who will have no problem expelling you and providing your name to the authorities.

Do not EVER assume what you do on any computer (even your own) while on the campus network to be private. It's only private if it's legal, the second you cross the line, the doors are wide open.

watch yourselves!

Are you sure your friend isn’t just some attention whoring, power trippin’, wannabe dick? Cause that’s the impression I get from his facebook status.

We both worked there as undergrads he ended up staying after graduation and worked his way up. Power tripping? no. attention whore? no. He just hates when “children” take advantage of the system and leave him with the paper work. Is he a dick? yeah sometimes but his job is as a rule enforcer and he does have a job to do, if he doesn’t do it he’ll get into trouble.

So should I stay away from sites like Megaupload or Rapidshare, etc? I’m definitely staying away from torrents, but how safe is file sharing sites like the ones I mentioned? I’m not using them to download music, but I do stream/download videos from there, is that bad?

streaming is fine, it’s the P2P like torrents that gets noticed. for all of you who illegally download music. just google for how to pull audio off of YouTube Videos.

Wait so are sites like Megaupload and Mediafire fine for downloading music and TV shows?

MediaFire and MegaUpload should be fine

Would 4shared.com be ok to use or no?
