Linguistics and Japanese

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could provide any opinions and input of being a linguistics major...

How are the teachers? How were the courses you took.... and if you studied abroad for the linguistics program for a specific language or something... Anything would be GREAT!! :)

Also, anything about the Japanese program would be awesome too..

Thank you. :D

Hey blooshoo! I am only a freshman, but I’ve wanted to be a linguistics major for forever and I’m still planning on it at this point, so I can tell you a little about the department! It’s still relatively small - linguistics only became an official major last spring - but it’s definitely growing at an amazing rate, and the intro linguistics classes have been really popular the whole time I’ve been here (I have yet to get into Intro to Linguistics after 2 tries because so many people want to take it…). There are 3 professors and they are all very enthusiastic about linguistics and very friendly.

Also, I’m glad you asked about study abroad; they JUST started a linguistics study abroad program this year! The first one will go next year, spring 2012, and they plan to run it every other year after that. It’s in Kyoto, Japan, which fits into your Japanese interests as well  The head of the linguistics department has a lot of research interest in Japan, and he travels there frequently, so there are a lot of courses on Japanese linguistics and now we have this study abroad trip to Japan as well.

I don’t know much about the actual Japanese language program though, sorry; have you looked at their website? You can probably email one of the professors and I bet they would love to answer any questions you had.

Thanks imbri!

Yep, I already checked the Carleton website and all of it sounded so great… I just wanted to see if most of the students really did like their experience in the classes and with the teachers etc.

It would be great once you get into the class… (hopefully… by this year?:D) you’ll share more about it!

I’m also really glad to hear about the professors!!

thanks:D!!

My D is a junior linguistics major and has been very happy with the program. She likes the professors, classes, and co-majors.

As for study abroad, she went abroad in the fall on a non-Carleton program where she did not study linguistics, but functioned in her target language by living with a family, taking classes, and living in the community. The study abroad time did not interfere at all with her work toward the linguistics major.
