Hi! I'm trying to learn more about linguistics and hopefully will be able to get some input from an actual linguistics major (or at least someone that has taken some form of linguistics)

I'm thinking about taking linguistics 1 in the fall to see if I have any interest/passion for it.. any input about the class? taught by Professor J. Rett?

I'm also thinking about taking psych10 and unsure about the 3rd class.. maybe a foreign language or science..

any input at all? or what classes to take that would compliment the other two classes?

I originally wanted to take arts and architecture but will hold off 'til winter quarter when I might take math 3A or chem 14A

My daughter took Ling 1 this past spring (she was a freshman). She said it wasn’t so much the origins of language but more phonetics and stuff (she had Prof During). She didn’t firnd it all that interesting to yu may. Just wanted to let you know that if you want to take Arts and Arch 10 you should take it now. I remember last year it was only offered in the fall. Many classes are NOT offered every quarter so if there is a unique class you want to take than go for it. I do recommend 3 classes if this will be your first quarter.

yea AA10 is a fall class i think. i took ling 20 and it was pretty interesting…learned a lotta useful stuff. i believe ling 1 is similar. i wouldnt major in it, though…all linguists do is study languages and find patterns.

I just want to say that Linguistics is not what most people think it is. It’s an actual science (that’s why LING 1 fulfills the Life Science GE). If you really want to know what Linguistics is about, I recommend taking Ling 20 instead of Ling 1. Ling 20 is the introductory class for Linguistics majors and is more about linguistics and Ling 1 is more about “language” in general. Ling 20 fulfills the same GE too.

yea ling 20 was very formulaic. not bad at all.
