Linguistics Major, CS minor and Bio minor a good idea?

Hey, so I'm an undergrad student and I'm looking to pursue a major in Linguistics, Minor in CS and minor in biology...however after some deliberation I am not so sure this is worth it.

My goal is to work in IT, or go to grad school in a CS related field.

I do not have the prerequisite grade 12 math for a crucial math course for my uni though, so I can't major in CS... I could talk to the undergrad head for the department but just in case it's a no, is my plan an ok one?

Sorry if I posted in the wrong thread or something, this is my first post in any forum ever!

Thanks!

Why can’t you take the prerequisite course you need in order to take the math class for a CS major? Even if your school does not offer it (and make sure you double check on this–many schools offer remedial courses to get students with a weaker high school background up to speed), you may be able to take it at another university or community college and transfer the course. Or you may be able to learn the material with a tutor or online or on your own and then test into the course you need.

If you want to do something related to computer science, then you should really major in computer science. Talk to your adviser to see how you can make it happen. I’m sure you’re exhausting all of your options, but I find it really hard to believe that you can’t major in computer science at all because you didn’t take one math course in high school. It may take you a little time since you’re behind in math and will need to catch up, but I find it hard to believe that it’s impossible.

Thanks for replying, I think you’re right and the best option for me is to just wait for January 5th when I can talk to an advisor. The strange thing is that I took A level mathematics and now study in Canada. But apparently I don’t have the prerequisite calculus in highschool. I am hoping that they just didn’t assess my grade 12 math course properly as that can be easily solved!

That’s a little bit of an unusual situation, and if you’ve taken A level maths it seems strange that they wouldn’t count that as fulfilling math pre-reqs. This is definitely an issue to take up with your advisor ASAP when you get back.
