Linguistics? Study abroad?

Does anybody have any first-hand experience with or impressions of the linguistics program at CMU? My daughter is interested in it. The Language Technologies Institute looks like it would be a good resource different from what's available elsewhere. Also, how is study abroad?

If you are talking about a major in linguistics, that’s an interdepartmental program hosted in the Detrich College of H&SS. For undergraduates, the Language Technologies Institute (LTI) offers a minor in language technologies. While there’s certainly some overlapping, the latter is mainly about natural language processing (NLP), which is much more closely related to computer science rather than the traditional area of linguistics.

Thank you, jellycat! Yes, I’m talking about a more traditional linguistics major but thought the LTI minor looked interesting. I guess I’m curious overall about what it’s like to be at CMU if you’re in a more traditional, non-science field. We’re visiting on Saturday, but I’m just trying to do a little preliminary legwork.
