Is LinkedIn really that important of a tool to have as everyone says it is? Also out of curiosity, would connecting with current and former professors be considered appropriate?

It can be very helpful if it is used properly. I helped my son set his up over the holidays. And yes, he did link to some of his professors.

I’ve found my LinkedIn to be quite useful for informational interviews and such. Also, employers like to see a profile and look at what you’ve done in the past. And I see no harm in connecting with professors.

LinkedIn works quite well if you are looking for a job. It acts as a reference so your resume and what you have online show similar background, you can request people to recommend you online so an employer can see the recommendations, and you will get unsolicited requests to apply for jobs.

It is very professional and it is better to connect with your professor on LinkedIn than Facebook.

Although it may not yet come into play just yet for us, it’s good to create your profile now and begin connecting with others. You never know what your classmates will be doing 5-10 years from now, and if you’re connected on LinkedIn, you may have the advantage of being accessible.

It’s important to establish your linked in early so that when you are ready to utilize it, you already have connections.

agreed. It’s better to have it than not have it.
