Yeah… I’m positive that I’m going to be deferred.
Aaaand, WE’RE ONLY TWO(ish) WEEKS AWAY FROM LEARNING OUR DECISIONS. I’m going to be a MESS.

LesOs, my son also believes deferral will be his result. In his case, he thinks it is lack of AP opportunities (taking Chem and Calc AB now online), and low essay standardized tests (SAT I 800 math, 750 WR, 740 CR, 9 essay; ACT 36 composite (7 yikes! essay, but he wasn’t retaking once he hit the 36). What makes you think you will be deferred? It is sort of intimidating to see all of the fabulous resumes around here. Also my son didn’t fill out any of the optional stuff on the app, cause he thought he would just sound kind of bogus if he did.

^^crazymom, I wouldn’t worry about the low writing scores. On a few occasions, MIT Adcomms have said they don’t think highly of the writing test.

Add me to the list.

9 on the SAT essay’s NOT low. And I don’t think low writing scores (low would be like a 5) would get him rejected from ANYWHERE; besides, his writing composite from the SAT and his reading/writing MC portion scores from the ACT are still very high.

What’s making ME think that I’m going to be deferred?

1.) Not many (a.k.a. no) science ECs. There’s a science team at my school, but I’m interested in the biological sciences, and the team only concentrates on physics/engineering. I contacted professors about research but… no luck. And, I honestly did not have the time to found a Biology Club (doing so would have been stupid, as I wanted to be able to devote myself to the activities that I already had important leadership roles in). Luckily, I have strong science grades/some decent science awards/a great rec from a science teacher. HOWEVER… my ECs are definitely weak.
2. My SAT Math score. I don’t know why, but I’m terrible at the SAT Math. I got a 700… MIT SAYS that any 7XX score is good… but honestly. So many applicants have 800s that I can’t help but feel inferior (sometimes). I do think that MIT is the type of school that sees students as more than silly numbers buuuut… All the same, I hope that my math grades will pull me through.
3. My essay was risky (my approach was, anyway…)
4. It’s MIT. How can anyone be confident that they’ll be accepted?

4 is a good one, haha!

I’m not an EA but I thought I’d just drop by to tell everyone good luck! Cuz hey, as one of my friends’ brother said, “Once you get to MIT, you realize everyone’s just as stupid as you are!” It’s all chance and luck; the best we can do is sit tight and hope. Relax. Now that it’s over you guys can all chill while us RDs are working our butts off on our apps!

LesOs - no worries, I’m another EA applicant with no science ECs. No research, no science-y clubs, no science fairs. :P

LesOs, I’m guessing an edgy essay will be a plus. The only science EC my son has is the Science Bowl team, and they always complain about how many biology questions there are, because most of them are stronger in Chem and Physics. Good luck, maybe you’ll be surprised.

Also, thanks to those offering comfort on my son’s writing scores. He knows he is supposed to write the standard five paragraph generic stuff and can just never bring himself to do it. He also is slow at the physical act of writing for some reason, and has a hard time with the time limit.

I probably won’t get rejected, because I don’t see MIT openly rejecting a val without character issues, but I am realistically counting on a deferral before an April rejection. we’ll see though, I’m staying optimistic.

Thanks! Good luck to everyone else, too.
I’m being a realist, though, so I’m praying for a deferral.

Hey! You guys should post your strong attributes. In other words, what do you have do you think might attract the MIT adcoms.

Thats whats more important. Not some big-@$$ list of people who are applying.

I think we have the list partly so that after we find out who’s been accepted/deferred/rejected we can compile a list of that for next year’s prospies.
I, for one, definitely intend to perform some sort of statistical analyses on them. =P

uh I didnt write a 5 para essay, mine was 3…paragraph count doesnt mean anything, it’s all about the quality of the piece.

Hehe. Those essays. I took a rather slipshod approach to the lot of 'em. I figured that my best bet was to characterize myself as strong and likable person. I didn’t take any major risks…well, at least they weren’t major from my perspective: The first essay I wrote the day before the deadline; the second I started writing fifty minutes before the deadline and finished with twenty to spare. I do my best work under pressure. It’s like my vocabulary unfolds in front of me and the words flow like poetry into the keyboard. Either way, I’ve never noted that stewing over an essay has helped me with one. So I had absolutely nothing to lose!
