If you really are curious about HI (bears&dogs and/or others), indeed there is SOME rivalry between Punahou and Iolani, but many students have friends and/or relatives at the rival campus.

As a practical matter, not aware of too many people at Punahou (or Iolani for that matter) who take nearly the # of APs that the OP on the thread you reference mentions; most are happy with maybe a handful, max. I prefer not to waste time/energy on “chance” threads. In any case, I don’t generally post on threads that haven’t been written on for months.

I do know one person who was at Iolani that actually DID take 14 or so APs by May OF SR year, of which at least 2 were self-study (Env & US Gov–he got mostly 5s & two 4s), but that was considered extremely unusual, even at Iolani & had the registrar scrambling to see if she could order the tests to accommodate him. Of course he didn’t get credit for all those exams because the U he ended up attending capped incoming credits @ 60, which they gave him.

Both Iolani and Punahou do a pretty good job of prepping students for colleges & both get most of their students to good/great colleges. In Iolani’s HS graduating class of 2006, about 15% were NMFs and about 15% (not all the same kids) went to USoCal (many with significant merit awards). That year (and all years), they send some to ivies & other similar Us, including an All-American volleyball player to went to Stanford. Many of the families have limited assets–know one kid who was accepted by Penn but chose Boston U over it because of better merit + FAid package offered. The val that year went to in-state flagship U on full-ride plus private scholarships. She’s now in her 1st or 2nd year at Mayo med school in Rochester, MN which was free for her 1st year (but very cold).

Both private schools have GCs that try hard and have good relationships with many Us. Not sure how many parents of those HSs haunt CC. ;)
