List of Stuff to Bring to College

A List of Stuff for Transfers and Students

A calculator if you’ll be doing any science or math classes. If you’re in engineering or higher math, you should invest in a TI-89. Everything else, a TI-83.

Ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper

Plastic, cheap flip flops for the shower

Duct tape. You should always have duct tape.

A toolbox, or at the very least a hammer and screwdriver.

A stapler. No one ever seems to have a stapler when you need it!

Bottle opener and cheap corkscrew. No explanation necessary.

USB Thumbdrive. You can get these really cheap online, and they’ll save you countless headaches in the future. Plus, you’ll be able to share music and movies, etc, with your friends easily this way.

Printer. You don’t need a printer (there are places to print on campus), but it’s much easier if you have one. I recommend a cheap black and white laser printer – that way you don’t have to swap ink cartridges every five seconds.

Fabreeze. Keep it in the bathroom if you’re in FT, or just keep it for general use anywhere else. There will be a thousand occasions you wished you had Fabreeze.

Posters. Bring some cool posters to decorate your dorm room with. The "Beer Pong Constitution" poster was a big hit for me.

Computer. Bring a desktop or a laptop (or both). You could get by without a computer, but it would be hard. I haven’t met anyone who didn’t own a computer in college.

A doorstop. You know, those rubber triangular looking thingies that you stick under a door to keep it open? This is a BIG ONE that a lot of people forgot. They’re really cheap and are GREAT to have. If you can keep your door open with one of these the first couple days, you can meet everyone walking by right away.

A TV (?). If you like watching TV, the dorms have cable you can just plug into. If you have a nice TV too, your room could become a hub for group movie watching seshes.

A laptop lock. This is another big one – I would never leave my laptop unlocked in the dorms, even if my door was locked.

A mattress pad. The mattresses in the dorms aren’t the best, so get a decent mattress pad to throw on top of it. You’ll be glad you did.

Some plastic under-the-bed containers.

Noise canceling headphones. (I have Sennheiser HD-280s). Noise-canceling means that when you have them on and are listening to music, you won’t be able to hear anything else around you. This comes in handy.

Towels, both beach and bath.

Pillows, comforter, sheets.

Any musical instruments you have. Some people leave these at home thinking they won’t play them, then request that their parents ship them up a few weeks later when they realize how fun it would be to jam with floormates.

Your fall quarter textbooks. Get your textbooks online before you get here. I’ll never buy a textbook from the bookstore again unless I absolutely can’t find it anywhere else – half.com and amazon.com have much better prices than the bookstore.

Football, frisbee, anything like that.

At least one formal outfit (suit for guys, etc.) You’ll probably spend most your time in shorts, tshirts, and flip flops, but occasionally you’ll have a job interview or a class presentation where a suit is required. Everyone forgets this one!

Desk lamp. That way, you can turn the dorm lights off so your roommate can sleep while you stay up and start your homework that’s due in two hours.

First aid kit. You’ll probably wake up with bruises and cuts that you won’t remember incurring, you crazy party animal you. It’s nice to have some Neosporin at least to treat these wounds.

Ethernet cord. A wired connection to the internet in the dorms is much faster than the wireless one. (There are two ethernet jacks per room, so this isn’t a problem.) Get a 15' cord at least.

Extension cords, and surge protectors. You’ll need a bunch of outlets to connect your eight thousand devices you have (cell phone, laptop, light-up neon beer clock, blender, strobe light, TV, etc.)

Hangers. A lot of people forget hangers. Or you can just go to Kmart down the street and buy a pack for next to nothing.

Brita water filter. You save a lot of money using a Brita – you won’t have to buy bottled water. (Or, you can filter cheap plastic-bottled vodka through the Brita a few times, and it will come out tasting much better! Just don’t attempt to drink water out of it again without changing the filter... or you’ll be drinking vodka water.)

Mini fridge. Coordinate with your to-be roommate about who’s bringing one. (You only need one.)

A deck of cards. How else do you expect to play **** the Dealer, Up the River Down the River, or Kings Cup without cards?

Ping pong balls. For... ping pong.

Alcohol. Smuggle in alcohol the first day so that night after your parents leave you’ll get to be ‘that guy’ or ‘that girl’ who came prepared. Share it with all your new roommates and make some friends!

Shot glasses. (Get some cool ones.)

Camera.

Your laptop charger and cell phone charger. That would suck if your cell died while you wait for your parents to ship you your charger the first couple days of college.

Knowing how to do laundry. You should probably figure that out before you come to college so you don’t look like an idiot.

A backpack – preferably one that fits your laptop snugly. (They make backpacks with laptop sleeves... check those out.)

Speakers that you can hook up to your ipod or computer.

A fan. Sometimes it can get pretty hot, and the dorms (all, I think. FT for sure) aren’t air conditioned. (This is because we usually have a cool ocean breeze if you keep the windows open.)

Red cups.

A board game or two that can be converted to a drinking game, like Catch Phrase.

This is a list I found on: Gaucho Insider | Things you should bring to the dorms
Its for UCSB but I figure it could provide useful to UCSC students as well.

Comments on a few items:

A doorstop. - Every dorm I’ve been in, each room comes with a doorstop.
Some plastic under-the-bed containers. - Depends on your room type!
Any musical instruments you have. - And a muffler, please. I can feel the vibrations in the floor of people playing their instruments…that’s not so fun.
Brita water filter. - Nothing wrong with tap water, fosho.
A fan. - Brought one, haven’t used it once…
Noise canceling headphones. - YES. SO NICE. I have Sennheiser HD 202’s, I think they were around $20. Best investment ever.

Dang, that’s pretty useful. Though some things seem a little overkill… printers suck and I’d rather just borrow someones or print on campus the occasions I need one. A first aid kit, toolbox, camera… these are things I’d just borrow, too.

Hopefully not everyone has that mentality, or there will be no one to borrow from.
I’m actually one of the few people I know who has a first aid kit and toolbox. :/

keep in mind it was made for UCSB…ie the fabreeze item mentions FT haha

I always try to rely on the kindness of others ;)

Your names fits your persona ;)

oh snap so much crap to bring :(

Oh, you might want to bring a laundry bag. I’ve seen ones that can be carried like a backpack and those are VERY useful if you got a big load to carry to the laundry room.

Porter rooms definitely don’t come with doorstops. No matter which college you’re at, BRING ONE, it will be used, trust me.

Bring and fan or two. The rooms get really stuffy. You won’t be sorry.

Is there a way to sticky this?

So yeah, for UCSB that’s pretty good, but for UCSC you’re going to need some smoking implements! My suggestion: a solopipe. Check it out, [Solopipe Overview](Solopipe - The Original Self-Lighting Pipe + Lighter Combo – solopipe), you’ll never be caught unprepared. Only for tobacco, naturally!

@Hadrian Lol Well what if you don’t smoke? Btw, You sound like a salesman. xD

If you don’t smoke, you will. ;)

Nah, I don’t smoke anymore either. We’ll just get left out of all the blazing happening everywhere (or so the rumours would have me believe).

I hella Lol’d. So is there anything missing from this list?

good question

If you have a choice between bringing the microwave or mini fridge, go with the microwave. Let your roomate bring the fridge. It was a pain moving out this week since the elevators were broken (try carrying a fridge down the stairs). Also you will need the microwave if you get an apartment for the next year and you won’t need the fridge anymore.

I wonder if any UCSC students would like to add to that list? (: Since it seems for UCSB dormers

banana slug spirit  XD
