List of the best ACT prep books

Is the Princeton 1296 ACT questions accurate? Because I’m consistently scoring in the 30’s (for each section).

My List and compilation of other’s

Red Book- basic review but has the best practice tests as they are actual released ACTs

2.Princeton Review-(2009,2010) Solid review and great practice tests that seem pretty accurate. (2011) The makers jumbled up the review of the English section which just seems more confusing to me as it was harder to follow. I’d suggest just getting the older versions of PR. Words of wisdom: Don’t bother buying three different versions of PR in the hopes of getting 6 different tests, the practice tests stay the same which is disappointing.

3.McGraw’s 10 Practice Act Test-No review just tests. The tests felt slightly easier than PR and the Red Books but nevertheless has same format and gives good practice over basics. English was pretty simple, math simple as well, reading and science are probably the two sections closeset to the difficulty of the actual ACT.

Princeton Review 1296- More Tests! Basically there are three full practice tests and then three tests for each individual sections. If you want more tests similar to the real ACT I’d suggest this book. Should watch out for the test maker’s errors as several reviews on Amazon claimed there were wrong answers in the book.

5.Barron’s 36-This book is hardcore, it covers some basic problems but most are designed to be the toughest problems to insure that you can successfully complete them. Great explanations but the format of the content can be a mess sometimes and could distract you while your trying to read the problem.

6.Preparing for the ACT booklets
Good stuff but lacks explanation for answers.
~082349

7.ACT for Brainiacs
It offers the hardest types of questions that appear on the ACT
~averagedesi

8.Kaplan ACT
Info is basic and questions/tests too easy
~saintpaul
9.Barrons
too comprehensive and harder than the real thing
~saintpaul

10.Dissecting the ACT 2.0.
It tells you where you can go to get free real ACT test
~Theartubaby
I checked the makers of this book’s website and they have several links to the past Preparing for ACT booklets like from 2004(I believe) to the current ones. Really curious about this book as it is highly reccomended and written by someone who got a 36. If anybody has this book feel free to tell us how it is.

Sparknotes ACT
sparknotes has a free act prep study guide…good for a quick review
~polypeptide
I will probably try this out in the next month and will update on its content and tests.

If anyone has anymore good ACT test prep book/tests please share with the community thanks!.

Is there any book that is best for improving science? that is the one i need the most help on :)

@xcb, in my opinion, ANY book will help you improve your science score. I’d go with the Princeton Review books, and maybe Barron’s? But I think the Barron’s might not be a very good representation of the actual test.

What helped me the most on science was just taking a lot of science courses.
But if you just do a ton of practice sections, no matter the difficulty, you’ll improve your science score by building speed and getting used to the format.

For me!

Real ACT: the best as you know

Online prep by ACT: It was about 20 dollars- 19.99 or 29.99. I cannot remember but it was not expensive. It provides two tests and one writing. It was helpful and after doing only this prep, my act composite becomes 27(writing8) to 29 (writing10) when I was freshman.

Dissection ACT 2.0: After I got 29, I only solved this after buying it in Booksamillion. It was 10 dollars something and was very informative. My score improves to 31. My counselor gave me the preparing act book.

1296 : I cannot remember this well but I guess it’s from Princeton Review. It was quite great book. But, for me, it did not work well though.

I solved McGrawHill’s, Barron’s 36,etc… (total more than 10…) But, I realized that they are not helpful… The only thing helped me was REAL ACT, ONLINE PREP BY ACT, and DISSECTING ACT 2.0. I waste my money… I think after doing three thing, anyone can get above 30 if they study really hard and make their owns strategies.

Which one is best for the english sections?

hmmm…i wonder which i should get…

ACT 36 helped me go from 30 -> 34-35 in English Practice tests.
Barron’s Math and Science Workbook helped me go from 28 -> 34-35 Math

Has anyone taken the ACT online prep thing? What did you think of it?

There are two books that are the best:-

The Real ACT (CD) 3rd Edition http://amzn.to/1j34M5M</a>
and
-Barron’s ACT 36, 2nd Edition: http://amzn.to/1lBCq4h</a></p>

If you only have like 6 hours to study, I would say get the Real ACT Prep Guide and do some practice tests in the back. Otherwise, you are going to need something in addition to REAL ACT because it does not have very good practice or strategy content. It will help you know what is on the test which is the first step. I agree with what has been said on Barron’s, it’s a legit guide - if you have patience for dry stuff.

This guy did a pretty good writeup I agree with: http://actbookprep.com/the-best-act-prep-books/</a>.

Hello everyone! Which book you think is better for English section: Grammar Workbook for the SAT, ACT, and More vs. The Blue Book of Grammar vs. The Complete Guide to ACT English? Thanks.

@crazyrussian I think any of the multi-purpose books like the princeton review one should be fine. Also google and understand modifiers, the 3-4 comma rules, idioms, subject-verb agreement, etc.
