Listing Parents on College Applications/FAFSA?

Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of filling out my college applications, and I'm hoping to submit a few of them today. Before I can do so, however, I need to know which parent I should provide information for.

My mother and biological father have been divorced since I was about nine years old. Since then, my mother has remarried, and I have lived with my mother and step-father for about four or five years. I've still kept great connection with my biological father. I visit him every other weekend, and he pays child support to my mother as well.

Given this information (I could provide more if needed), should I list my mother and STEP-father, or mother and BIOLOGICAL father when I fill out my college applications. Additionally, would this apply when I fill out the FAFSA in January?

I would assume it would be my biological father, since he is still legally my parent, even though I don’t live with him.

The parent you list on FAFSA would be the one you live with the most - your mother. Your father would be a non-custodial parent. I would do the same on the common app. Some private colleges will also take into account the NCP income for generating their expected aid numbers.

@"Erin’s Dad"‌ Thank you for the response! I know I will list my mother on the applications. My question is regarding when I’m asked to list a second parent. Should I list my father, who is a non-custodial parent, or my step-father, with whom I live?

I think the common app also asks if your parents are married or divorced, doesn’t it? Then list your father.

Answer honestly that your parents are divorced/remarried.
