Hey, current/former students, do any of you remember which translations are used for each of the required readings in Lit Hum? If not, is there somewhere I can find that information? Long shot, I know, but I want to see if the copies I already have of a few of these are going to work.

Call the bookstore maybe. I remember the Iliad is the U. Chicago Lattimore translation, but otherwise idk. It's probably cheaper to buy the used set from the bookstore than to buy each book individually however.

07-08 LitHum Syllabus

This probably won't change too much.

Also, there were people in my class who brought in other translations, and I don't think they had any problems. But then again, my class discussions weren't focused on textual analysis (so there wasn't a lot of "Flip to page 212..." and the like).

i would highly recommend that you get the correct translation...those who had different translations had a harder time participating in class and it'll diminish ur ability to follow some discussions in class

Isn't it better to wait until orientation week and purchase the right book from the Columbia bookstore?

(Oh and while I'm here, Huge thanks to Shraf for the PM Advice)

you're welcome :)

the bookstore is generally overpriced...however when it comes to lit hum books at least its one stop shopping though i think if you were to try to find all the books individually used online you'd get a better deal though you might spend alot of time searching.

my general rule was to wait until after the first class to buy books...though the lit hum ones were given to me so that wasn't the case for those.

^I tried finding the books online. The biggest problem: shipping & handling. It's hard finding all (or even most) of the LitHum books from one used bookseller, so even if you find a $14 book for $1.50 on Amazon, S&H will cost you several more dollars. Granted, the total might still be less than the retail price, but you're talking about ordering ~20 different books, and then you have to wait for them to arrive...

Also, the bookstore isn't egregiously overpriced for the LitHum books. Some of them are cheaper than the Amazon prices.

You can buy a used boxed set. I think it ran about $85 for last semester. Of course, if you just order them all from Amazon, you can get them new for a little less than that with free shipping.

Is it just me or would it be really great if we had a college-wide required textbook resale section on CC? I think they only make significant changes to the core every few years, and I'm sure most rising sophmores would love to split the difference between the bookstore buyback price and the used price with incoming froshies.
