My daughter is a current freshman at LIU Post. I can agree with everything that was said above. I will add that we felt training was way more important than facilities and while it’s nice to have state of the art, up to date facilities, that is not what is going to make the actors successful in the end. Everything’s we heard from faculty at other schools in the NY area said LIU had a good program that was up and coming. My daughter also visited some other top tier programs, Otterbein for example, and spoke with the students there about how bad the food was and the dorms were a little older and run down. I compare these two because Otterbein is a top tier program with facilities that I equate to what LIU currently has. But these are smaller private schools that don’t necessarily have the capital to invest in state of the art facilities like we saw when we toured DePaul and CCM for example. But my daughter absolutely loves the faculty and the training that she is receiving.
On the financial side, I too was concerned about the schools finances but all the articles I read were from a few years back. The school has a new president who came from the SUNY system and she has done quite a bit of work to shore up the financial standing of the school. The school just received an upgrade in the credit rating from Standard and Poor’s so it shows that the financial standing of the school is on the upswing.
Thanks for all the info, especially @NewEngMTMom, @Mommaofdrama & @BrokeDad0530. D’s vocal coach sat in on LIU’s 'Unifieds and has suggested the program to us but info like this is good to have. We’re on the West Coast so no easy access to check out all the Midwest and East Coast schools.
D did a walk-in for LIU in Chicago and got asked back for the info meeting, but we’ve heard nothing since. The acceptance thread says 2-3 weeks rolling. Anyone else still waiting?
@NewToThis13 In Chicago as well, and we haven’t heard anything yet.
I’m happy to help! I just thought I’d add that on Presidents’ Day a few of the kids went into the city to do a cruise line audition so that was pretty cool! The location definitely has its advantages
@NewToThis13 My daughter went to the meeting in Chicago also, but was already academically accepted and had a scheduled audition there. She just received her acceptance letter for the program Monday or Tuesday.
She also did a walk-in for the Brooklyn campus, but had not been academically accepted to that campus yet. We’re still waiting on academic acceptance for that campus, so you may be delayed waiting on the academic side. I spoke to the admission office last week. When I called they didn’t have all of the documents needed linked in her file. However, they went through and found them all while I was on the phone, and said she should be good. …but here we are still waiting for Brooklyn acceptance. I recommend calling the admissions office, to verify they have everything they need.
@NewEngMTMom @mtmaybe Can you tell me about how many students are in the MT class and if MT and acting take classes together how many people are in most of the classes?
@notmtinmd
Acting and mt students take pretty much all he same classes (Acting aren’t required to take musical theatre but most all do because it’s such a good class and has a lot of acting involved. We also aren’t required to take as many dance classes, but I think most, including me, choose to because of marketability.)
In regards to class sizes, I think there are around 45 mts and 7 acting majors in our class. Class size depends on the class. I think there are four acting classes this semester and about 16-18 per class. However, in later years this class size decreases as tech and dance majors are required to take acting 1 as well. This class size sounds large on paper but there is tons and tons of individualized attention.
Suzuki only has 3 classes but as the dance and tech majors do not take it, it ends up being only a little larger.
Hope this helped!
