Live Audition or Video Audition for a non Major? - scholarship only and ensemble placement audition

I would love some advice here as S17 has the opportunity for either. He is not auditioning for the school of music but for scholarship only, and ensemble placement. He feels strongly he’ll have more control over the product with a video submission.

However, the school is only 90 minutes away (University of Puget Sound) and it seems to me that live would show the greater interest as distance certainly isn’t a valid excuse. Instrument is Trombone and his focus is Jazz if that helps. He will be uploading a music resume, which has not yet be created so any tips on that would be helpful.

thanks!!!

I am out of my comfort zone, but that hasn’t deterred me before! On one hand, it would seem he does have greater control over the video submission, and it is a whole lot less stressful than a live audition. However, most schools will favor the music majors for ensemble placement, especially as freshmen. A live audition may be of more value to the faculty in assessing his performance skills, and as you say, show a higher level of interest in the program. Good luck.

@songbirdmama thanks. I am going to have him ask his private lesson teacher for input I think. I do know that his instrument is in demand at the school (as does he). It might be better if he didn’t know lol!
