I should have called on friday before Collegeboard closed,
but here is my situation.

My parents were recently separated, like early December, and i have been living with my dad since then (same home)
My mother has moved out but she provides more than 50% of $ for basic things.

On the fafsa I believe it asked to provide the info for the parent who you lived with the most or provided over 50% for you so i picked my mother.

On the CSS profile however it says pick the parent you have lived with the most in the past 12 months, but i think they automatically assume that that parent has provided the most for you. In my case that isnt true. I am only living with my father because my mother has moved out of the school district.

On top of that the CSS can only be submitted online, so i can not submit an explanation along with it. I am hoping to complete all my financial aid things this weekend because I have applied ED to a school that wants it by early january, and exams are next week.

Well since your parent moved out in December, the FAFSA is only interested in was occured in 2008. I would think you would provide both parents income because I am assuming they were together for the majority of 2008.

Separated parents are treated the same as divorced parents. You list only one, who is considered the "custodial" parent. That's the one you lived with most during the 12 months prior to filing. In your case, that would be your Dad. Skip your Mom's info on FAFSA. There may be a few questons about the non-custodial parent (Mom) on Profile.

[quote]
The custodial parent always completes the PROFILE application. If the applicant's parents are separated or divorced, the custodial parent is the parent with whom the applicant has lived the most during the 12 months prior to filing the application. If the student lived equally with each parent, the parent providing more than 50% of the student's support is considered custodial

I think when it talks about the parent who provides over 1/2 your support, it is not just talking about out of pocket stuff, but also room and board. So it might not be your mom. Private schools will want info on everyone under the sun.

You would list your Dad as custodial. It doesn't matter that mom provides more support. This is one of those few times when you get a break ... unless, of course, the school asks for the non-custodial parent info ... in which case, it will all be reported & taken into consideration.

The OP mentions the College Board...and the Profile. Seems to me that the dad will fill out the Profile as that is where this kiddo has resided (as others have noted). MOM will fill out the non-custodial parent form for Profile. Most Profile schools require that the non-custodial parent also give their info...some don't. Check with the schools. It is likely that both parents will need to provide financial info to the college via Profile or the non-custodial parent form.

Now...if the school were FAFSA only...just the Dad's info would be on the FAFSA...not the mom's.

Check with all schools to see if any require a school financial aid form. Some schools have their own form which is very similar to the Profile, and usually these schools also ask for non-custodial parent info.
