Living far away and travel concerns

I would love to go to Rice, but my family has a few reservations about the distance from home. We live 1,033 miles away in South Carolina. I have a few questions, but any general comments/opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Does financial aid include travel expenses? I've heard that some colleges do this.

Over shorter breaks, is it possible to stay on campus? Would it be a ghost town there if I did?

I live in TX and have a friend who goes to CMU. I don’t know about FA, since he didn’t get much, but I do know that he stays there for Thanksgiving and Spring Break. He told me that some go home, but there is a good amount that stay. I’d assume it’s similar for Rice.

Cost of Attendence at college includes an amount for travel expense. Look up any university that you are interested in COA and see if it is indicated. For colleges that give aid, COA is covered through Family Contribution+Aid Given.

Having said that I don’t see travel on Rice COA for some reason.

A student I know was just given an aid package and it included $1,000 for travel (at a different college, not Rice. Not a great deal, but at least enough for 2 to 3 trips home depending on how early she books a ticket and luck. Miles isn’t important, it is time traveled. It’s only a plane ride.

Each college will vary on when they are open. There are usually always international students around you can get to know. Start here until someone answers:
