I live in Long Island and I will be attending a CUNY school in the fall. Attending SUNY schools requires transportation which I don’t have because I dont have money to get my license, which means I don’t drive and buses are over a mile of walking and run certain times of the day and over here have no streetlights.
I was curious to know if grant or financial aid cover transportation because I’m most likely going to have to take the taxi to the LIRR and that’s $36 a day coming and going. Does the college pay and you’ll have to pay them back?, can you pay it with grant? , will grant cover it?
$36 x 2 classes a week
$72/week = $288/ a month
1,440/ a semester
I don’t think you can get a separate transportation grant but you can use your other grant money so long as it’s not earmarked specifically for tuition or the like. Will you get Excelsior?
Can you work out a deal with the taxi company for a discount based on volume use? Do you have a neighbor or friend who can drop you or pick you up at least one trip? Can you time your trips in and out of the city so that you can meet up with a family member, friend or neighbor who can drive you? Maybe put up a sign on the bulletin board of the LIRR waiting room for a ride and you can find someone willing to drive you for less.
Good luck.
If you’re only taking 2 classes/week, you’ll be considered part-time. Part-time aid is less than full-time, so there may not be enough to cover transportation after tuition is paid. Is that the closest school to you? Why are you only taking 2 courses?
I wonder too, now. I thought she was going to school 2 days a week, not just taking 2 classes. I did that when I attended CUNY. Two full days of classes from early morning to night and worked the other days. I took some classes that met once a week for 3 hours and others that met twice for 90 minutes each session and I was full time. Only in a couple of semesters did I take classes that met three times a week.
