I'm thinking about applying to NYU next year. I live in a small town in Maine and I'm used to living in a very rural place. I love cities and I've been to NYC a few times and it's always been awesome. But, I'm worried that NYU and the environment might be too overwhelming. Is there anyone going to NYU, or any other college in New York City, that grew up like me and could tell me their experiences? Thanks!

I am from the Midwest, but still a “city”. My neice moved to NYC to go to Columbia and never came back. I’m sure LIVING there is different than just visiting. And 9 months is a long time to a young adult. It’s akin to living there. But, at least you’ve been able to visit, some kids don’t even have that chance, and I’m SURE it’s culture shock for them. I remember myself that I always wanted to live in California until I tried it. But I never wanted to live in NYC until I went there and changed my mind instantly. I think it takes someone who loves the city. NYC is just a living breathing “thing” of it’s own. But, you’ll still probably get homesick. That’s what Winter break is for. Go back and see trees and shop in huge supermarkets and lounge around on your giant couch or your giant room. Drive again. Take up a whole booth at a restaurant for 1-2 people instead of hitting elbows at 2-tops or a luncheon counter. Being the only person on the street on Sunday instead of being 1 of milliions on the train (OK, NYC gets a bit “dead” on weekends too…but I’m sure not down at NYU). There are two sides two every story so I’m sure there are plenty of kids who will tell you they were homesick to see some sunshine within the first week (gotta get to a green space so the sun will not be blocked by the buildings)…I am WAY not in college but I know that’s what I notice when I’m in NYC. Walking the streets (now THAT didn’t sound right!) in the morning chill and KNOWING their is sun, but being unable to see it on the ground anywhere). Then there are kids who can’t imagine ever leaving. I know it’s just a visit, but when my (POSSIBLY NYU bound daughter and I visit…we are the type that have to be dragged home kicking and screaminng). It’s having a train instead of a traffic jam, being able to walk most places, the diversity (that sounds lame but it’s so true…having restaurants for EVERY type of cuisine…hearing every language in the world…knowing it’s OK to be different…etc), the culture (yeah, there are museums everywhere but NYC has everything! And we’re B’Way fanatics and THAT doesn’t really exist … at the same level … anywhere except Londonn), the parks within the cement, the opportunities. But it’s easy to get caught up in the “idea” of all that, then have to “live” the snow and cement and be brought back to reality, knowing some of us can’t afford all that NYC offers the “rich and famous”. It’s a tough call, a personal call. Good luck in your decision!
