Living in NJ and Applying to Princeton

Hi! I live in Northern Jersey... is this a disadvantage in applying to Princeton (what with geographical diversity and all)?

i would think so :-/ tis sad. so many things you have no control over that influence admissions

And yet there's no denying there's a good number of Jersey-ites at Princeton. Even from Princeton itself. There may be a disadvantage, but if so, it's a very small one. Looking through the Frosh Trip list from last year, you definitely wouldn't think so.

being disadvantaged doesn't lead to the conclusion that there should be few people from NJ... In fact the disadvantage comes from the large number of applicants which is what they want to keep down. From what I've read here, it is a disadvantage. From what (as far as I remember) they say on their website it's not.

Ladylazarus, I'm a Princetonian from Bergen County, so there's always hope. Which part of northern Jersey are you from?

I'm from Bergen too... Ridgewood, to be specific... where in Bergen are you from? That's a bit reassuring...

Yes, applying to Princeton from Jersey constitutes a disadvantage.

1.Princeton gets many applicants from instate and this puts those people in higher competition with each other as Princeton strives to maintain geographical diversity.

2.Jersey has many Princeton grads that grew up elsewhere but have stayed on after college and become residents . The children of those people who apply to Princeton are considered “legacy applicants”.

There are so many people from nj and penn at pton, I dont see how it could be a disadvantage. Nearly all of the people I meet are from the tri-state area. Coming from morris county, I know that a good deal of people got in last year and decided to attend. I dont think its an advantage (unless you go to phs, or another princeton school), but I dont think that its a disadvantage

I've heard about this disadvantage, but I live in North Jersey, and my classmate was recently accepted.

Oh cool ladylazarus... you're in Ridgewood. I'm from New Milford.

how about that i live in NJ - but came to usa 2 years ago from Poland - disadvantage or advantage?

hard to say, i dont know if you are considered an international. i came here 5 yrs. ago from china, assimilated well enough, so im not gonna enjoy the benefits of an international applicant.

benefits? you gotta be kidding :) the intl pool is more competitive.

Hey Tedjj,

I'm a freshman at Princeton now and I came here straight from Poland. We definitely need more Poles here coz our representation is pretty unnoticeable comparing to other nationalities.

Good luck, and I really hope you'll get it.

14% instate students! it can't be that hard...

Yeah, but that also includes legacies and children of faculty, I'd guess...

saccharine - dude - are you serious? I haven't talket to any Polish persn at Princeton - whats your screen name :P
Maybe I will get in if I will be lucky - but oh well - no hook :) but who knows:P

A ton of Princeton students come from NJ... you're not in trouble. NJ has one of the highest representations here.

NJ also has the toughest applicant pool bc so many NJ kids apply. lots get in, but more get denied. just bc there are lots there doesn't mean that getting there was easy. you'd have a better chance if you were from, say, Utah, because the applicantpool is considerably less competitive and princeton want geographic diversity.

great. i hate how there are billions of ethnic groups that aren't really ethnic groups. and mine isn't included. im an 'other'
