I am going to be a sophomore at the University of Denver next year. For my freshman year I commuted to and from school everyday which took 1 to 1.5 hours each way. I also don't have a car and public transportation is a huge pain. Basically, I feel that I could have been more involved on campus and excelled more academically if I had stayed on campus. For next year I am trying to dorm but my financial aid only covers my tuition, so I would have to take out about $10,000 in loans. Is this a wise choice? Should I continue to commute to save money?

I’d take out the loans, but I personally would never think of commuting. It’s about what’s important to you.

I’m going in as a freshman to UMiami, and they also only covered my tuition. I have friends who commuted there and friends who lived on campus, and those who live on campus were a LOT happier with the school and their social life. That’s why I’ve chosen to take out the 12k$ in loans and dorm. I do believe that it is a much better experience since you don’t have to be concerned with getting home super late if you decide to stay for a late night study session or club meeting.
