Hello,
I am wondering if anyone can tell me where I can find the definition of what qualifies as 'Public Service' as far as Loan Forgiveness goes. I have found reference to 'Undeserved Areas' or "Low Income" areas. This would be for a Nursing Degree.

Part of why I am wondering is I am trying to figure out if I would be better off taking out a Home Equity Loan, vs using the Staford Loans vs trying to pay out of current income. This could pertain to both my daughter and myself (still on the fence about going back to school at my age :) ). I figure if we took the Staford they 'might' be eligible for the forgiveness program, and if not, when schooling is done, I could always take out a Home Equity Loan to pay off the Stafords at that time if the rates are still better.

We live (and I think will stay in) in 'rural area' where in general there is not great health care services, but in our particualr county there is, and we are in a fairly low income state and low income county in that state (average about 50K household income, with 25% below 25K income.

googling loan forgiveness for nurses brings up a whole bunch of web sites, including:
[Nursing Student Loan Forgiveness Program Main Page](http://www.nslfp.com) and hrsa.gov/loans/repayment/nursing. Check out some of them for information.

There is the national health service corps ( the correct URL is below, KKmama is missing some part of the address). They provide loan forgiveness.

Your other alternative is join some of the armed services. Army/Navy/Air force/Marines/Coast Guard etc. need nurses.

Yet another choice is the Public Health Service which is an Uniformed Service but not an armed service. So an officer of the service will wear an Uniform similar to that of the Navy and have Navy type ranks but serve in say an Indian Health Clinic or an under served area etc. but can shop in a military PX, get tax free housing allowance. They need a lot of nurses and offer singing bonuses and possible loan forgiveness. Check it out.

Sorry, I was not trying to mean or snarky, I tried the link and it did not work, so I posted the link that did work. I do not try and belittle others, I was just posting a correction.

They do offer loan repayment and signing bonus. I have not read the fine print but that is what the web site says.

mazewanderer,
No harm, no foul. I didn’t look at my post when it first went up, so I didn’t catch what happened with the hyperlink. I’m glad you corrected it.
