I've heard that NYU is notorious for putting lots of loans in its financial aid packages. How do these loans work exactly? Do students borrow directly from the school or does NYU expect the student to find a private lendor for a certain amount of money?

yeah i have 35K in loans. it's all federal and the interest rate is ridiculously bad too so i'm going to borrow from a private lender.

NYU gave my DD a FA package that contained, Perkins Loan, suggested Stafford loans, Federal work study and suggested Family plus loans. You do not have to accept any of there suggestions, but if you need loans the absolute BEST option is to take the federal loans, not a Private student loan. The perkins and subsidized stafford loans, the gov pays the interests while the student is in school. The federal loans are backed by the government and they also have deferrment terms as well as forbearance should something happen to the student. Also laws can change later down the road which may benefit the borrower. Private student loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy. Many finance and money exerts say the private student loans should be considered absolutely lastr after the government loans.

You were assigned 35k in loans for just one year of attendance?

Basically for me they gave me a scholarship and then offered the rest of the 50K tuition in loans. It's ridiculous how much money they expect you to borrow, but we decided not to take out a loan.

yep, 35K in loans per year. I doubt I'll take it though. The interest rates for federal loans are too high.
