LOANS FOR MED SCHOOL

I know that it varies for each people, but up to how much money can you borrow to attend medical school?

Currently, medical students can borrow up to $40,500/year in unsubsidized federal direct loans so long as they have not exceeded a lifetime limit of $224,000 for undergrad + medical school combined.

If you have good credit, you may be eligible for Grad Plus loans up to the published COA of your medical school. Grad Plus loans have a higher interest rate and a higher origination fee than federal direct loans. Students must re-qualify for Grad Plus loans each year.

However, there are proposed changes the federal student loan program under review in Congress that will lower the annual loan ceiling to $28,000/year and cap lifetime loan eligibility at $150,000. All Grad Plus loans will be eliminated.

If you want some idea of the indebtedness of medical graduates, AMCAS publishes an annual Fact Card on med student debt. https://members.aamc.org/iweb/upload/2017%20Debt%20Fact%20Card.pdf
