Loans without a Cosigner?

I really want to go to college, but after my deposit was put down, my mother refused to allow me to go to the college, and I filed as a dependent. Depending on how much I make this summer (provided I can FIND a job), I'll have to get a loan for about 2-5 grand, but my guess is about 3. This makes me ineligible for the PLUS loan, though, and my mom has poor credit, anyway. I don't really have credit built up, so is there anything I can do? Maybe go independent? Although I filed as a dependent, I should be going to basic military training during the beginning of next year, and the school wants me to confirm it, so can I change it? I just need to figure out a way to make things affordable, since my grades suffered due to personal problems, but I'm certain I'll flourish in college, I just need to get there.

You will not be able to file as an independent unless you are 24, a member of the military, are married or have a child which relies on you for support. Your status should not change until you actually get through basic. If you get through basic you’ll get some specialty training which might actually qualify for college credit.

OP: I’m confused. You indicate you are “…going to basic military training during the beginning of next year.” Have you formally enlisted? That is, have you taken the physical, signed all the necessary paperwork, raised your right hand?

If so, then it sounds like you’re heading off to the military, not college. Can you clarify?

It’s easier to get private or institutional funds without a cosigner but it’s riskier. You might even consider waiting until you’re through basic training.

Basic training? Are you referring to ROTC funding?

The OP is likely enlisting in the National Guard. Hence, basic training then college.
