LOAs out there?

"Note to Redhead89 . . . . he is hoping you get one, too!"

I strongly second that :) (and also figured out how to make smileys)

Hey guys!!! I'm sorry, I haven't logged on in a while. I've been super busy. You know, it's funny that you mentioned it. Because something relatively wonderful came in the mail today. I GOT AN LOA!!!

Congratulations, ZMAN! That's awesome! I'm so proud! And Stealth, tell N that I'm really happy for him too. I was really confident that he would get in. It's really exciting to already have friends that I know I will see at USAFA in 8 months. That would be awesome if we're in the same squadron!

It's been a great help having this network of people, and I know I'm going to have a lot more questions, but for right now this is just an awesome place to be! Congratulations, you guys!

Darla,
His file was completed around the middle of September and he is being recruited for gymnastics. He went on a recruiting trip there the last weekend of September. :) (note smiley face zman!)

Outstanding!!! Congrats to all of you -- now don't take that nomination for granted-- you will get it, but there is that one story about the cocky kid who had the LOA and his MOAs refused to give him a nomination .... could be just AF lore but I still say it was good to assume there was truth to it!

In son's interview with one of the Senators from Wisconsin, the panel seemed to not know what an LOA was. They asked him to see a copy of it (which he had brought a couple of copies along...always prepared), and asked him to explain what it was. Now, I would think that this panel should know about this kind of thing. Do you think it was part of the interview to see if son knew what it was, or do you think they really didn't know what it is? The rest of the interview was discussion of the Air Force vs. Army game. The whole thing lasted 10 minutes.

It is possible that the Cong. panel did not know what a LOA was. In our area, the panel members volunteer their time to interview but may not have any relationship to any of the Academies. Panel members may have served in a branch of service, some are educators, some are business professionals. The LOA is offered by the Academy only to applicants that meet the admission standards (at least on paper). The Cong. and Sen. Interviews help screen applicants on subjective traits.

you can bet that the congressional staffer knows what an LOA is whether the panel does or not. Copies of LOA's are sent to each congressional district. Some candidates hear about their LOA from their congressman before they get the letter from the academy.

I just finished my application this weekend. Is it too late to hope to get an LOA?

LOA's are given out anytime before nominations are in. After that the academy simply offers appointments. This is referred to as "rolling admissions". The majority of appointments are offered in mid-March, but others are sometimes sent out as late as June. If you get an LOA or an offer of appointment any time before March, it means they really like you. Of course, if they offer you an appointment at any time, they like you, too.
