I'm thinking seriously about applying to Wesleyan. Have not yet visited. Can any current students talk about whether it's easy to get to New York and Boston as a freshman? How often do you all go to those cities? Thanks!

Here's where I come in! :-D

It's actually relatively easy to get to the city from Wes.

You can either get to the New Haven Train Station by shuttle (it costs $5, and you have to reserve a seat a day in advance) or by cab (it costs $63.60--YUCK!).

Oh, and Wesleyan also has a "Ride Board" online where students both offer and ask for rides; this, in my opinion, is the cheapest/most efficient option.

Since I live in the city (Manhattan), I go back at least every 2 weeks 'cos I tend to get really homesick. Even with that said, Wesleyan has so many great things happening on campus that you won't feel so easily compelled to go to either city. :-D I promise! There you have it. :-D

As for the other students in general, they don't necessarily go to either city all that much at all. Many tend to stay on campus for parties and stuff. :-P

^^^do you know, Santogold? :D

Even people who think they will want to leave and go to either Boston/NewYork a lot wind up staying on campus because (a) it's easier (b) it's cheaper (c) it's more fun.

That said, public transportation from Middletown kind of sucks. Public transportation from nearby cities - Hartford, New Haven - is great. The trick, as showtunesguy said, is getting to those cities. Often a friend will give you a ride for gas money + a little extra, or you can share a cab with friends. You can also get a ride to Meriden (which is closer than New Haven) and then take Amtrak there - or you can get a ride to the Middletown bus station (off of rt. 91 I think, NOT within walking distance) and get a cheap bus to New Haven. Or, like showtunesguy said, use the ride board and try to find someone else going to Boston/NewYork that weekend. Cheaper & more fun that way.

yea, taking a cab to New Haven doesn't really make sense when the same Amtrak trains (for the most part) stop in Meriden which is three miles away. I paid $25 with tip, my last cab ride from there.

Thanks, I wish there was some kind of direct train from Middletown but it doesn't sound too hard. Staying on campus must be pretty good, musicwise, if people Santogold and MGMT came out of Wesleyan. Thanks again, can't wait to visit.

My daughter is a rising senior. When she applied to Wes she thought she would go to NYC and other cities frequently. Never happened. There is far too much to do on campus and getting to nearby cities turned out to be an expensive hassle. Because of this, the internal Wes community provides endless opportunities for engagement.

My son didn't feel the need to leave campus much as a freshman, but he did go to New York and Boston once each during the year, using trains and buses. It wasn't too hard, he said -- and of course when you're young the journey is half the fun.
