Location

Hey,
I'm just wondering about Wesleyan's location. I've always considered myself a city person, but am considering applying to wesleyan. is not being near a city an issue at the school or is the on campus community more than sufficient?
any opinions/experiences would be great, thanks

I'm a freshman at Wes, so I've been here a month, and the Wesleyan community + Main Street is more than adequate. There are always things to do/ things going on, plus downtown Middletown has a 12-screen movie theater, laser tag, tons of amazing restaurants, etc... you get my point. So at the rare time that there isn't something to do at Wes, Middletown is a nice backup:)

wesleyan students give me the vibe that they're a little more cosmopolitan than students from some of the other lacs. so although not near a city the culture of the campus may be nyc transplanted?

I feel like fur uncle's comment rings very true from my experiences. There's very much an NYC scenester kind of crowd; over the summer, it almost feels like half the campus is in the NYC metro area (which of course, can't possibly be true). Compared to other LACs I'd visited, Wesleyan definitely has more of a self-consciously sophisticated feel (which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing).

As for the campus itself, I mean, everything is going on on campus. I mean, most schools have art exhibitions and theater and concerts and improv and film series and wild parties, but not all going on at the same time every weekend ever like it happens at Wesleyan. I'm pretty sure that people from other schools in CT come to us for parties... and when Wesleyan students get sick of the scene here, they go to NYC :P

just wondering how far it is from middletown to nyc and boston. Also wondering if there is any transportation(train, bus, anything?).

Transportation from Middletown is absolutely TERRIBLE.
There used to be bus service to other parts of CT, where you could then take a train (train from New Haven or Meriden) but it's pretty much gone. The bus is Peter Pan, totally unreliable, and only leaves once, two days a week (Friday and Sunday).

That said, there's a fairly good ride mafia, and you could probably find someone with a car willing to drive you for gas money.

Middletown is like 2.5 hours from New York, and transportation will be excellent if you bring your own car... (Wesleyan's one of a few schools that let you have your car on campus as a freshman)

Meriden is 3 miles away; if you didn't have to watch for all the crazy New England drivers you could jog there. How much is cab fare now?

Meriden train station is 8.9 miles from Wesleyan. Quite a jog, especially considering the only access to it is via an interstate. I think a cab there would run you about $20-$30.

New England drivers have nothing on CA drivers...geez most of them can't read the speed limit.

I'm astonished; it's like you're on 66 then, boom you're there. I don't remember how much we paid. I think it was in beads and trinkets. :p

That said, though, driving to the Meriden train station takes all of 10 minutes, so it's not hard at ALL to convince someone to take you.

The New Haven train station is about 25 minutes away, also a totally reasonable distance to have a friend take you, so really, getting to NYC is a snap. Hartford is a similar distance if you're Boston-bound, although Boston seems to be less of a destination for the cabin-fever-induced weekend trips.
