Lofts

Does anyone know the name of a company that builds dorm lofts in new york? Thanks.

A COMPANY!!!??? Great lofts aren't bought; they're designed and constructed by the student who wants one, then sold to the next resident.

From the MIT web site <a href="http://web.mit.edu/housing/standards/housing.html#lofts:%5B/url%5D">http://web.mit.edu/housing/standards/housing.html#lofts:</a>
"Lofts

Plans for construction of lofts must be submitted to the House Manager, who will review and approve adequacy of structural design. For reasons of safety and to ensure that sleeping residents are visible in a building fire search, lofts may not be attached to building components or be enclosed with drapes, curtains or doors. The structure must have smooth surfaces with no protruding nails, bolts, or angle forms. Per electrical code, no electrical wiring or lighting fixtures may be fixed to the loft structure.

"Sprinklers must not be blocked or shielded and "coffins” are prohibited. Additional regulations cover location, height, and size and are available from the Safety Office. Completed structures are subject to inspection by the House Manager for approval. Lofts are prohibited in Simmons Hall."

Our DS transported the components of his self designed loft to his apartment last weekend. He is probably assembling it as we speak. His is a full sized bed plus a desktop/closet. We preassembled here at home, with final assembly on site in Troy.

Policies for lofting vary from school to school, at Dartmouth you are not allowed to loft your bed. Doing so will get you at minimum a $300 fine from the office of residential life.

Columbiamom,

Are you sure the college will allow a loft to be built in the dorm?

Your Room
Your bedroom is furnished with a bed, chair, chest of drawers, desk, bookshelves, and wastebasket. Your windows are covered with mini blinds, curtains, or shades. Your mattress is extra long (80" x 36"), and your bed frame is 9.5 inches off the floor. Depending on the residence hall in which you will be living, the floors of your room may or may not be carpeted. In either case, you are welcome to bring your own floor covering. You need to bring your own pillows, linens, and blankets. Please note that you must keep all furnishings in your room, including bed frames and mattresses. Owing to space limitations, we are unable to provide alternate storage for any furniture.

Something you may want to be aware of----we just dropped our freshman D off at school this weekend. The school she attends sent a flyer in the mail over the summer for rental lofts. My D did not opt to get one but one of her HS friends did. The particular dorm that she lives in has built in bookcases attached to the room desks. It turns out that the desk/bookcase combination did not clear the bed when used with the recommended loft. So, it is wise to check measurement details of room furniture out before ordering lofts.

Hey, what happened to the other posts in this thread?

Question is posted both here and in the parent's cafe.
