Logistics of moving home for the summer

I hate to even think of this because my D is having such an amazing freshman year but I am starting to look at flights to get her home in May. She will be be storing her stuff and I am trying to figure out how it will all work. The issue is that she would like to come home on an 8 am flight on 5/12 to be home in time for an event that evening. But how would she pack up her linens and get them to the storage company if she needs to leave campus at 6:30 AM? I assume that they do not come to your room to pick up packed boxes. Where do the students drop off their boxes? Also which storage company do you recommend? She can't fly home on Friday because her last final ends at 5 and there are no flights to Boston that late. Thanks for your help.

Actually there is a storage service that comes and picks everything up. If her roommate will still be there then she can work something out that way, or with the RA. Tulane will send out notices with the names of the approved companies.

The other option, if you don’t mind the extra expense, is to have everything packed and taken away before that and let her stay at a hotel near the airport the night before her flight.

As an RA, my suggestion is to tell your daughter to get the stuff picked up before the day she leaves. We will be giving out information a few weeks prior to the end of the school year for the storage companies etc. She will be able to stay in her dorm for the night before she leaves. We will take her key in the morning when she leaves. So no problem there at all. By the way, which dorm is she in?

She lives in Monroe. Yes, she will defnitely have everything packed the day before except her linens. So the problem is that she needs to get her bedding to the storage company before she leaves campus by about 6AM.

Well, I am glad you brought this up Mumof2. We have a daughter who is graduating on Friday, May 11th from Vandy, and a freshman son who needs to be moved out at Tulane by 9AM (? is this really correct ?) on the 12th. I am wondering if there is any way to get an extension, even just a day, since obviously with graduation at Tulane still pending there will be plenty of people still around. Since we have an RA responding on this thread, I am wondering if you would comment on that Guhengshuo.

I think the best solution is to just pack everything up and sleep on the mattress for one night… It is virtually impossible to get the stuff to the storage company that early in the morning, but I’m not sure whether they have drop off service though. I think it’s still too early to worry about issues like this. When time comes, we will have better solutions, since the problem will be quite common. So, Don’t worry about it. It’ll all work out!

All Residence Halls close for Spring semester

We are closing on Sunday morning. As of the policy now, there is no way for any resident to stay after closing time, since the dorms will not be staffed any more and nobody can take the responsibility for the residents. However, since it’s closing on sunday, it gives you an extra day already. Hope that helps!

@guhengshuo, thanks, but the reason I am thinking about this now is so that I can buy a plane ticket. I don’t think sleeping on a “naked” matress without its feather topper, comforter, pillow, etc will be an option for my D! She is not the type to rough it!

@kreativekat - they don’t have to move out until Sunday (there are still some finals on Saturday 5/12) so you should be fine…

mumof2 - there are some fairly inexpensive options for motels near the airport, and I am sure there would be a shuttle as well. That still seems the best option. Have her stuff taken away sometime during that day, get a taxi or shuttle to the airport motel, crash there that night, and get to the airport easily the next morning. Probably an extra $100 or so, but certainly makes the logistics much easier.

The other option is to find a friend checking out after she leaves for the airport and ask to store her last minute stuff with the friend’s stuff. Then they can swap back in the fall.

In reading these posts, I have a suggestion based on our freshman year’s experience. At semester’s end, there will be many boxes for sale around campus. Perhaps you might weigh the cost of the extra bag (box) that she could pack with linens last minute and check at the airport against the hotel fee. Truth be told, we ended up getting a room in Metarie for ourselves, our D and 2 friends and your D might find some friends to share a hotel and cab with.

I don’t know if this will help but I just bought my daughter a “Slumber Sack” for six dollars at Ross. It is basically a sheet sleeping bag with built in pocket for a pillow. The cloth drawstring bag it comes in about 10’ by 5’’ and could easily be put in a tote. She just visited a friend at another college and I don’t love hearing about sleeping on whatever borrowed student linens. She is also going to being studying abroad and I thought it would be good for the side trips.
